Why Sat Nav? Does it hold the value better.
The I-drive is great and more toys that just the sat nav. I wouldnt get another BMW without it.
As OP is driving to work and back i doubt sat nav is a requirement,
You can have traffic updates. Don't most people drive their car back and forth to work?
and I'd imagine if the car is a few years old the sat nav will need an expensive update. Much better to just buy a Garmin/TomTom for £70 every few years.
You can update BMW sat nav maps too.

There is no need to scrutinise a suggestion so much.

The opposite of incorrect wheel drive, which is what most cars sold have.

Where the rear wheels are only there to stop the back dragging along the floor.... :)

As someone who does a lot of miles myself (25k a year) I prefer the compact nature of a smaller car. So I drive a Lupo SDI, seriously good MPG, no performance whatsoever, but you can also run on veggie oil which will save a surprising amount of money.

However, I think my next motorway cruncher will be a Polo SDI 9N, these have air con, electric mirrors etc. Just a few more creature comforts which I miss in the summer. That said, this Lupo doesn't seem to want to die, and I'm smashing miles on it for fun right now.

Yeah the OP should definitely follow this advice and buy a tiny little banger of a city car for his motorway centric driving, great advice.

I managed in the M5 with 255 rear tyres, starting work at 4am so first one on the road every morning.
The dsc kept it in a straight line.
Then I jumped in a lorry with 2 pairs of 295 width rear tyres and rwd and did my work round the villages.
Fwd and narrow tyres is better, but it's not everything :)

Saw a fair few BM's and Jaguar's struggling. Pushed one as I walked into work :D

Ah someone who perhaps thinks that they don't need winter tyres if they have FWD.

A RWD car with a set of winter tyres has only one problem - how to jump over all the cars without winter tyres who are scrabbling about and blocking the road in front. :p

Unfortunately I didn't specify the 'jump' option when i bought my car. ;)

Cue for posts now from all those who think:

I've managed fine without winter tyres for xx years.
We don't get enough snow in the UK.
    They are too expensive.
Granddad didn't have/need any so neither do I
I have nowhere to keep 4 extra wheels/tyres.
If we really needed them there would be a law about it.
    It's all smoke and mirrors.
It's a capitalist plot to encourage folks to buy tyres they don't need.

The three worst cars I've had in winter have all been FWD.

I've had no problems at all with any of my BMWs, two MX-5s and my current Jeep (which has been in 4WD mode for about half a mile in the 1000 miles I've done in it just to check it works).

Being able to pull away/stop/steer/not crash in snow isn't about FWD or RWD, it's about finesse.

Or, since I discovered the value of decent all-weather or winter tyres about four years ago, having the right rubber.
