Thanks for the suggestions, looks like a bigger car may be the way to go. Looks like they do decent mgp on the motorway but not great in town- opposite to the small capacity petrols I have been used to.

BMW, Audi, Insignia etc. will all do the job adequately

I have a BMW 320 ED as company car
    its economy often surprises
On a recent biz trip (m40/M6) up north stats were as follows as per journey computer screen
    70 mpg
    69 avg speed
    176 distance

average so far over 50k miles = 56mpg

BMW 320d would be my choice if I were you. Find one with the Sat Nav.
  • With big mileage, unless it was a brand new car with a warranty I would stay well away from the 320d, from personal experience it will brake, and parts extremely expensive, not many engine repairs for under 1k as everything is programmed and not made to last! I have had both the 320d and a newish Mercedes C180, both utterly unreliable!

As per 'beenthroughitall' posts, the PD 1.9 tdi is a fantastic engine, I have a Golf MK5 1.9 TDI now and its the most reliable car I have owned, 50 mpg min and will last easily up to 300k if regularly serviced
  • Seeing you've had such good service from the Yaris, maybe try a 1.4 Diesel version of the later model.
Lower bhp than your current car, but 50% more torque, which should make those long hills easier.

Alternatively your high mileage makes Hyundai of whatever model takes your fancy a good choice, 5 years unlimited mileage.

Suggest you price up the cost of proper servicing to keep that warranty intact, might find Toyota is still a better bet, tend to stand by their product after normal warranty has expired so long as its been reasonably serviced.

Skoda Ocatvia, cheaper than the 'premium' brands, most come with a decent range of toys (cruise control for instance might be useful). Decent range of engines to choose from. Cheap to service and repair and nice enough to drive.

Had two 1.4 diesel Yaris, first one I had from new and only started being a problem after doing 216,000 miles in 8 years. The current one has done 136,000 miles, 110,000 by me. Just had a £1200 bill but will be happy to buy another.
  • Given the mileage you intend doing, have you thought about buying something cheaper which won't depreciate so heavily at the end of your expected term of useage? Any £10k car will have lost quite a lot of value with 160k extra miles on it.

I've not looked but maybe a 2.0tdci Focus for £5k? It'll still handle the miles if serviced correctly and you might be able to get a grand or so back after punting it on.

With the OP already satisfied with toyota reliability I am surprised no one suggested a Diesel Avensis...... something wrong with them that I am not aware of?

Why Sat Nav? Does it hold the value better.
As OP is driving to work and back i doubt sat nav is a requirement, and I'd imagine if the car is a few years old the sat nav will need an expensive update. Much better to just buy a Garmin/TomTom for £70 every few years.
