I was out on my hybrid on Friday there and managed 20 miles in 1 hour 35 minutes with a bit of wind.

:rotfl: At first I thought "hybrid" was one of those bikes with electric motors... I was wondering if you even bothered pedaling to reach this speed :p

Not sure of the point you're trying to make?

I read their comment to mean they were amused at their misunderstanding of the term hybrid.

I've had a few people mistake the rear hub on my hybrid for an electric motor but definitely not, all human powered.

It could be your brake blocks are stuck on!:rotfl:

Probably more to do with being both unfit and overweight.
It doesn't have brake blocks, it has brake pads ;)

I find with advancing age, I'm actively choosing the 'places' category over the 'performance' one. :)

Not feeling too great this morning, had a business meeting in town, instead of taking the bus I cycled there, a 24 mile round trip, now I feel much, much better, the exercise along with the fresh air and sunshine seems to have helped. ...

I apologise for the weather yesterday as I made the clearly ill fated choice of taking the road bike out of hibernation and invited the wrath of the weather. I was expecting it might get a bit weight but didn't expect to be struggling through high winds and snow, I ended up wetter than I think I've ever been on a cycle particularly as the bike had no mud guards. Also a bit of a change going from 4psi 4in tyres and hydraulic disc brakes to 120 psi slicks and rim brakes.

As I'm not planning on rejoining the road bike groups I'm back to considering a CX bike to get most of the speed of a road bike but with hydraulic brakes, bit more stable and mudguard mounts.

CX bike seems a good bet if you do mountain biking as well.

I went with a Boardman Hybrid Pro for my road bike choice and although it's pretty good i think in hindsight i'd prefer the more durable wheels / tyres and dropped bars from the CX.
Difficult to find one at reasonable price with hydraulic discs though.

My trouble with a CX bike is I wouldn't use it off road (nor for CX racing) but I think it would be good as a touring bike while still quick for road cycling. Rose bikes have some reasonable options with hydraulic brakes and they can take mudguards.

Crankset question here, I know of the various road bike options (currently run a 50/34 compact) but didn't know of the 46/36 cross option - what is the advantage of this, smoother shifting when jumping between chainrings?
