I did the last CX race of a series up here at the weekend, I'd debated whether to do this one as it was going to be dry and flat which didn't suit my bike or me but thought what the heck, it's only for fun anyway. Then I had the decision to go with the better suited 29er or the fat bike and went with the latter since I haven't ridden the other in ages and couldn't be bothered moving everything across.

It turned out to be a really fun race as it was a short track and no carrying the bike, the 4in tyres worked well on the grass carrying a lot of speed particularly through the corners which gave me the best result of the three races. And while the good weather conditions were not great for the bike (which gets its biggest advantage in poor conditions), it's a lot more enjoyable riding in the dry as the bike didn't even need washed afterwards.

I tried three cameras this time, I'm still experimenting how to put them together but quite like the way this turned out:

I was out on my hybrid on Friday there and managed 20 miles in 1 hour 35 minutes with a bit of wind.
    Felt fine after it.
Went out on my mountain bike on the Saturday and done a mix of on / off road with some hills. Managed 13 miles in approx 1.5 hours.

Feeling it today though. Up to now i've only been out roughly once every 2 weeks for the odd cycle.

Now of the above is very impressive by most people's standards here but i'm obese with a BMI of 31 and it's not down to muscle or bone structure.

  • I had to get the tube on Saturday. Bloody awful, and it cost me money to get to my destination slower than I would've been on a bike. And I had to deal with other people!
    It's only numbers.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Trying out some modest non-armoured tyres on the road hybrid, done a bit over 100 miles on them in the last few days; must be working out well, as I'm planning some longer trips out in the evenings once the clocks change.

Sounds impressive to me, that's a good bit of cycling back to back and hope you're enjoying it.

Before cycling I wasn't that bothered about the clocks going forward but now I'm counting down the days, I had my first cycle of the year last week in just shorts and t-shirt and always look forward to phasing out the need for lights on the MTB night rides. It can be oddly satisfying pushing through on a muddy winter ride when the weather is doing everything to stop you but it's certainly a lot more pleasant out on a sunny evening in just short and t-shirt hammering along a dry trail with lots of grip.

It was my first sportive of the year on Sunday. 900 riders completed just under 60 miles of rolling terrain - nearly 5000 feet of elevation.

Well chuffed with my solo effort of 3 hours and 7 minutes at an average of 19.0 mph, which brought me in in 15th place overall, first in the over 55 category!

Plenty of life in the old dog yet!

Congratulations, that's an absolutely outstanding result particularly amongst such a large field of cyclists and knowing how competitive road races can be.

Throughout the entire ride, only two cars passed me, I passed about five! That's my kinda cycling!
