Well I guess from their point of view, £5pm is better than losing a customer.

And I guess there is always the chance they will sign up for a tv package.

Again, thanks for all the contributions. Should I opt to put my telephone AND bb eggs in the Sky basket so to say,

If Sky will continue to give you £5pm I'd stay as you are. Line rental with Sky is very slightly cheaper although you don't pay for Caller ID with Sky. BT has line rental saver and Sky does not so it could be cheaper with BT and you would get Caller ID free if you committed to 12 months.
what are the pitfalls should I not wish to continue with them in the future? For arguments sake, go back to BT plus another bb supplier? What about keeping my phone number? Grateful for a steer and apologies if these are dumb questions.

I have moved from BT to Sky and then moved from Sky to PlusNet. Each time I was able to keep my phone number so it is possible to do this. However you have to make sure you handle it correctly by letting the new provider arrange it all.

A lot of providers these days give you better prices on BB if you have both phone and BB with them.

Sky are currently doing a free BB deal for new customers of existing customers upgrading to unlimited BB so you may be able to do a deal for free BB if you agree to move your line rental. See what they offer.

I have noticed since I got sky bb the 50-75% off sky TV offers I was receiving every month have now stopped :( so going to another provider could assist the TV offers

Interesting. I was a sky tv customer (binned them summer 2013) don't miss it and very happy with the savings made. I was an O2 bb customer (free for the final year and a bit) then migrated to sky bb £5 per month last March; initial offer was £7.50 pm).

I continued to get 25% off TV offers until summer 2014. It then increased to 50%! Slightly different to your experience but not seen a mailshot for a few months now I must admit. Virgin Media on the other hand never stop sending their carp through. I was an NTL customer years ago and still get the offers.

jem16 - thanks for that. I love a good haggle so I will give it a go.
  • I was in exactly the same position as you op .

I took a leap of faith (i was ex o2 also and moved to sky bb) and sky offered me free 12 months bb IF left BT line rental to take sky line rental.

Sky line rental is a little cheaper than BT and with free bb its a win/win in my humble opinion.

In 12 months time i can maybe renegotiate and as another poster said its cheaper to have both with one provider.

Also to add that the sky customer service is very good when needed, which surprised me somewhat(and its free to call them)

I also used 1899 with bt and i can still use this with sky by dialling another number (look at 1899 website).

    Hope this assists you.

I will be moving to another provider. Just calculated since my bill went up, with a basic package and fbb I am paying an extra £360 per year!!! Spoke to Sky via chat to a lovely lady called Laura who was most unhelpful and they aren't prepared to do anything until the end of the contract - which they are entitled to do. Was with Virgin for 14 years and they are offering me a lovely package thats cheaper again. Definitely SKY are not concerned with Customer loyalty!
  • FYI Check out offers on uswitch (I don't work for them!!)
Don't get Sky movies in my lovely £69.40 bundle and Virgn is till cheaper!!

Why did it go up £360 per year? Did you have discounts previously?

If you're still in contract why would Sky change anything from what you agreed to pay?

Neither are Virgin, really like all businesses.

Agree with jem16 re loyalty. Most large providers of goods/services aren't interested in loyality being focussed on market share and maxing out revenues (a business model that works). As a consumer, if you have the time/inclination/tools (eg. internet access) you have power. Frankly, I don't believe in loyality to these big companies either, and play the mirror game of 'get my goods/services at the best price'. Emotions can run high of course but if you are able/prepared to play the game, do your research, then haggle, it can be fun (which is free)!

I accept that many people are fed up shelling out top dollar for years only to see the best deal going to new customers but if you can 'ditch and switch' then even your ungrateful provider may blink first.

I treat getting stuff (that is broadly the same where ever you go) as a game. Get the best deal you can and move on and don't check on here after you dealt in case someone is better at it than you ;).

Thanks to MSE and the fantistic contributors on here, I am winning.

My friend got exactly that deal when she phoned to ask for her MAC.

She was on £5pm with BT line rental and no TV since moving from O2. She is still on £5pm for another year.

I got the same deal but my download speed has dropped from 5-6 mbps to around 2.5, although streaming seems to be unaffected. I think I will have to give them a ring.
