carphone warehouse - no credit debit card no phone

so ive had just a cash card for some time now it helps me budget and it was my choice to get just a cash card. but recently i went into carphone warehouse with two forms of id and cash they wouldnt give me the deal i wanted because i didnt have a debit or credit card. when i said i could come in with my mum and she could put it on hers they said no it had to be mine?
there was much whispering in the corner between staff about what could be done and i felt awful for not having a credit or debit card and honestly felt like a criminal for all the whispering and looking over of shoulderage.
what can i do the deal i wanted is the cheapest and i can not get it anywhere as cheap hellllpppp can they do this to me ???

is the deal a contract? if your cashcard isn't on a debit account, how will you set up direct debits for your monthly contract payments? Have you tried asking carphonewarehouse online?

Having a cash card will not stop DD being set up. The reason they need a debit card/credit card is to take the first payment which also asked as ID to prove you are who you say you are. After that payments will be taken from a DD

but they use the DC/CC to take the first payment as an ID/verification process with your bank a cashcard is not a valid form of ID

Yes. A retailer can set whatever conditions of sale that they feel like, as long as it's not discriminating against sex, race, disability etc. If they insist on a credit or debit card (for reasons explained in posts above), then that is their right. Your only options are to get someone else to make the purchase for you, to get a credit or debit card, or simply to buy from another company that doesn't have this requirement.

OP i am sure tesco mobile will take cash for an initial payment, not sure what ID they will accept instore, you can check the location of a tesco store that has a mobile concession using the below link

    No they won't
A pre-authorisation payment has to be either debit card or credit card.

It's not just about the money
  • It's just BS from CPW. Any criminal will still get phones regardless. All this is doing is stopping genuine people from getting a phone.
  • All that should be required to set up monthly payments are your bank details (sort code and account number) plus proof of ID to set up a direct debit, that is how my monthly payments work.
A card is not required for this purpose and it gives the supplier power to take money out of your account at will in a way that can be difficult to stop as other posts on this forum show.
Do not deal with any company that insists on your card details rather than a direct debit authorisation for monthly payments as DD can be cancelled by you at any time (if the need arises).
