How often do you use a cash machine/get cashback?

Currently working on our budget and things we pay with cards for is fine but cash is a problem - have been putting off spending diarys for a while but think August is our month.

At the moment we both get cash out our joint account when we need it, sometimes one of us will get more out and give the other some and sometimes we just get our own out.

I'm wondering how other people sort out their cash - do you get a set amount out on a set day each week? Do you have a set amount you get out a month but get it when you need it?

As it's the start of August tomorrow and we both have very little cash at the moment I thought I'd have a think about this today.

Thanks

My mum is awful with cash! She says she never spends much money, and then there's several £10 cash withdrawals through the month.

I just take £20 at the start of the month, convert it to change and only take what I need with me each day. I.e. it's £3.40 when I park for work

    As above really.

I hardly use cash at all. I pay with cards when and where I can, its easier to keep track on things then. I might get £30 which can last a month.

This month I'm getting my cash organised from day one :) I get £200 for groceries this month and I have split that as follows:
    week 1 £35
    week 2 £35
    Week 3 £35
    Week 4 £35
    Treats £60

I haven't had to lift this out as I did some work for a mate at the weekend and got £50 and we sold an old PC last night and got £100 cash. So just need to make/find another £50 in cash and then I won't have had to use the cash machines at all! YAY!

I would suggest maybe using the same "jamjar" system I use :) I find it makes it easier to manage my budget.

See now I'm the opposite of most people here. I am terrible at keeping track when I use cards, its like I'm not spending money unless I actually hand over the cash.
In answer to the OP question, I take out cash once a week, just before I go grocery shopping. It is supposed to last me until the following week but as with most things usually doesnt. I dont have a set budget but aim for a rough amount as if I set it too rigidly I'd cry when I went over and probably splurge to make myself feel better.

  • Once a week to withdraw my weekly spends. Any of my personal spends/me spends generally gets payed my debit card from a seperate bank account, i must admit though i hate using cash machines, i would rather go into the bank... but thats just me :o
  • I move £300/month into a seperate current account with visa debit card and use that for my food and beer each month. The is direct debits to mortgage/bills and standing orders to savings accounts etc.

I go the cash point every 2/3 days fr a tenner, i use the card in a supermarket but dont get cashback.

Every Saturday morning because the local markets, butchers, fruit and veg shop don't take debit cards. If I have some left the next week I adjust the withdrawel down. Sometimes I remember to ask my OH for it, so I get a 'free' week!!!
