you need a spending diary... honestly it works... if you know you only have £3.00 and if you buy that top for £6.00 you will be short and you have to write it in your diary you wont buy it... also confessing all on my/moozies daily spends thread helps... honestly

I go to the cash machine on pay day and take out the money that I need for the month. I keep a spending diary and it does seem to work I also put all my change into money jars and somehow most months I am now managing to cope on my tight budget.
The key as a few people have said is a Spending Diary its been a life line in helping me sort out how I spend my money each month.

I haven't been doing a monthly budget for long but found that by taking out a set amount each month for other half and me has made me actually ration what I spend. I didn't think that I spent that much on "me" but it's amazing what rubbish adds up to at the end of the month! It has become a contest who can make it to the end of the month with the most money and I am going to win!

I've been keeping a spending diary for just under a week and it's really making think about how much I spend. I've not bought lunch at work, I've thought about exactly what I'm buying in shops - it's as if I feel accountable to my little cash book every time I think about buying something because I know I'm going to actually see it written down in black and white. Normally I'm useless at keeping these kind of things going but I'm getting a bit of a kick of seeing how little I can spend - I feel very virtuous! Today was quite expensive but it was things I've meant to buy for a while so that isn't so bad.0

Now I have got rid of my credit card debts, I limit myself to twice a month and withdraw a max of £50 each time. I usually have funds leftover.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

I find that using cards is like using virtual money, makes me feel loaded and i overspend. Last month i started taking out what i need for the month on payday, seperating the money into envelopes for different expenses, e.g. food, luxuries, phone credit, petrol, and keeping a note of what i spent. Got through a really expensive month (parents 25th anniversary, bf bday, paid for holiday) and had money left at the end of the month...that has never happened before, it really works for me!

Hi, i withdrawn a set amount every week for grocery, petrol etc - i dont have debit or credit cards so have to use cash, but once its gone thats it - dont have an opportunity to get into more debt. i think whatever you use you have to be strict with yourself.0

Thanks to everyone for their replies.
Got £40 out at the post office yesterday morning when I posted an amazon parcel and gave OH £20 (it's a joint bank account).
I've persuaded him to try a spending diary this month and hopefully this will help us work out where the cash goes/how much we actually get through.
When I was a student I did all the time religiously - then got out the habit
Both had a NSD today (OH worked from home and didn't go out which is cheating a bit) so that was good.
