Neither, I'd go for a second hand Polo. Far better car all around.

Bit out of my price range and don't have the cheap road tax.

I am presuming that this is the old model i10 and hopefully the new one would be OK. Have to say that I haven't heard of this problem before, even with the old shape ones.

    DON'T GET ANOTHER FORD.

I have been a ford wh0re for years and wish I had sampled other vehicle makers.

    This is my only advice.

I haven't tried the new i10 but it gets good reviews. It is, however, less basic than the Up (which I guess most people would see as a positive). Even S trim has central locking and electric front windows.

I had a citigo until recently, they are pretty much identical to the up and mii. If you add up the running costs, it's hard to find a better low mileage car.

The model I had was an SE greentech manual, so zero tax and insurance group 1. The 60mpg+ is actually possible if you are really gentle with it, though that gets boring fast ;) Cheap tyres, cheap servicing, cheap all round. When I got rid of it, the depreciation was pretty easy to live with too, as it wasn't that much to start with.

Good: Visibility, easy to drive, easy to park, passenger and boot space better than expected. Grip on corners is really good. Easy in snow. Air con is effective. Comfortable enough for a long drive. Capable motorway cruising. Gearbox is quick. Built well even though it's a cheap car.

Bad: Lack of lighting in the boot and parcel shelf isn't attached to boot door, so you will drive off with it still up the first few times. Overtaking takes planning. Speed bumps are a challenge (some models, including mine, have lowered suspension.) Passenger side electric window switch not available to driver. Lack of soundproofing (wheel arches, gear box.) Exposed inner paintwork (easy to scratch.)

I had the clutch noise a lot of people complained about, lift your foot of the clutch quickly and you get a 'clunk' as it engages. It never caused any real problem for me, and the dealer did other work under warranty without question (exhaust heat shield).

Boot nets are a recommended purchase if they aren't already in the car.

up just has an ugly front, the front is made to look like its an electric vehicle without a grill.

but its a good ride, quite roomy inside because they've shaved off the unnecesary padding. the inside doors are painted metal - dont have plastic door cards from what i remember. So they've worked well to recoup as much space as possible to make it roomy given its size.

its quite punchy as well, very responsive as its such a light car.
