They certainly would charge you for the use of the room as it would have to be fully cleaned again. Would you want to check into a room that another guest had just used for a quick shower and change?
Well if a room was available they could just give you the room for your night's stay rather than giving you some separate room to have a shower in??

    WUM!
MasterPoo, I can't believe some of your naivety.
Money obviously isn't a problem, whereas you accepting sound advice seems to be.
    So just go for it.
    Then report back.
    Good luck!

No... They can just let you use rooms that haven't been cleaned yet. I've done that numerous times in hotel/hostels, and can always use the communal stuff in normal hostels.

The attitude/atmosphere is nothing like a chain hotel. If they can physically find a way for you to use a shower they generally will! Small non-chain hotels generally will too - I agree with you about the likes of travelodge though (but still wouldn't completely write it off!).

Pompey why do you say that?

So when a person doesn't know and asks a genuine question, they are "naive"?

I've accepted the advice to either pay to guarantee I get the room, which I've chosen not to do or just turn up and see what happens, which I've opted to do? So I'm confused by you saying "I'm not accepting sound advice"? What is your statement based on?

I've turned up early before and sometimes they already have the room available. Is it Thai baht, if so it's not much as isn't it 50 baht to the pound?

Hi Dawyld, Yes it is Thai Baht, in their response to my request (see OP) they said 16050 = £328 extra to check in early, I'm not going to pay that. So as you and others have suggested I will wing it, see what happens when we arrive.

Yes, "winging it" is the best advice. Be polite and hope for the best. If they say yes then great. If they say no then make the most of it and hit the town.

My betting is that they they won't have a room to check you in but will offer you a day room so that you can have a quick shower and change. Then hit the town.

Even if you are desperate for a sleep there will be plenty of hotels in the area who will happily sell you are room for the day for £20 as long as you don't expect Shangri La levels of service.

Never mind, I read it wrong. But they will go out there way to help where possible, esp when spending so much

An amusing thread. I can't remember ever arriving at a hotel and not being checked in immediately, regardless of the time....other than perhaps when I was backpacking.
5* properties don't let you sit around for hours waiting for a room.
I'm not super impressed with the Shangri La, but I doubt they will have the OP waiting....especially if he has informed them of his time of arrival.
  • I've just received this email from them. I'd not contacted them after your advice to wing it, fingers crossed I get there and I have a room ready, if not I'm sure we can amuse ourselves for a few hours:
    Dear MP,

    Greetings from Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok.

Regarding your enquiry for early check in, we have well noted and it is on request which is subject to the availability on that time.

We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you to Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok.

    Best regards.

This is a different approach to the "pay XX for early check-in"???
