Good afternoon Elite. Just popping on with a question...not shopping related

I started home educating dd2 just before Christmas and we've been doing really well...that was until this question on reverse percentages:

There are 6000 people at an ice hockey match.

The announcer says this is exactly 40% more people that the previous match.

Explain why the announcer is incorrect.

We've worked out the percentages and get that there would have bee 4286 people at the previous match. I don't get why the announcer is wrong! Any Elite maths geniuses out there?

    Is it because 4,286 x 140% = 6000.4

If there was exactly 40% more at the second match, then there can't have been a whole number of people at the first match..

You've worked the numbers correctly though :)
June wins: 2 x Robbie Williams tickets, iPad mini, £200 skatehut voucher :)

A huge thank you to all posters xx

4285.714285714286 not exactly ;) off the top of my head :rotfl:
    6000.4 would be 40% more than 4286
or it may be a trick question

I can't remember how old I am, let alone a list of 111 items. :rotfl::rotfl:

  • Just came back from the most complicated shop of my life! How do you lot do this without going crazy?! I was staring at my phone checking and re-checking things. Good job it was only 5 items :rotfl:

Morries vs ? using cos and s-tize.

Seabrook lattice crisps £1.99 (-£1 cos) (1000 match points?)
Phileas Fogg crisps £1.99 (-1.99 cos) (1000 match points?)
Lindt Lindor Truffles £4.00 (-£4 cos) (500 match points?)
Hardys Stamp Shiraz £7.25 (2470 match ps?, 1500 more points)
    Betty Crocker Pankcake mix £1 (-£1 s-tize)

(NOTE: Exactly how I got the match points is a bit of a guess. According to msm A should have been 5.06 cheaper, and T 4.97, but 4970 is what I got).

Recycled my £15 of biccy vouchers, plus £1.23 of actual cash, and have cashback of £7.99, and £6.47 of morries vouchers.. so I think thats cost me £1.77 :)
