The local news has been full recently of student deaths in the city centre......3 undergraduates have lost their lives in the River Wear in the past year. There's now calls for fencing along the river banks and ideas are being put forward to change the drinking culture amongst students. And here's the challenge. The aerial view shows Durham Cathedral and castle within the loop of the river wear ....underneath the trees along the river are paths:eek: Such a tragic loss of life........... and what looks like an insurmountable problem

There is a similar issue in York. People (particularly young people) when 'well refreshed' think it's a good idea to take a shortcut by swimming across the river rather than crossing one of the bridges.
And in Durham, under the trees on the left in your pic if I remember rightly, there are lots of lovely picnic areas; last time I was there, the students were celebrating the end of term with riverside parties.

I have spent £49.22 actual cash in January, I have a purse full of small wombles and APGs and also waiting to claim some APGs from C&Cs. I find it very difficult to track properly as I do not record value in APGs I start with each month. I do have a spreadsheet for my C&C APGs so I can see when I have gone over. I am really trying to stop shopping but how can you resist woopsies and you can not let APGs go out of date. Going to try and put £20 in a purse for fresh stuff and have £20 for C&Cs to top up C&Cs for Feb and see where I am at. Off to count my APGs now and will keep a log.
Should I go to Lidl in the morning? Wanted the turkey but do I need it? Decisions.

:think:Not sure whether the online shopping is proving cost effective. I know people often/sometimes get more APG back than the original bill, so actually is worthwhile, but maybe the min. spend and not maxing out (but then having to buy essential items that don't always refund their whole cost) is causing the cash spend? I could spent absolutely no cash (or debit card etc.) for a whole month - well, 1 or 2p per shop, possibly a few pence added up - everything with wombles/APGs back off wombles. Those high cost fruit and veg. (and potatoes) in A however do eat into the womble amount quite a lot. However, I do need to be spending £150 on a GC that I put there over a year ago. (In retrospect - maybe that was wrong and should just have had the entirety through wombles?):rotfl:

You can get fallow periods or periods like now where wombles generally perhaps aren't that great. But, even there, I've still managed to get the odd £3 one even though perhaps other people are struggling to achieve even that? I wonder about the cost of petrol and try not to do special trips for wombles, as you can find you end with total nil return. Usually though it does give a return. And, believe, me £3 goes a very lonnnngg way, when you are as savvy as me:D. I've helped my wombles though, by buying (yes, buying:eek:, with cash:eek::eek:) the huge sack of potatoes in M when they were £2 - hope they go back to that again. More lately I'm using the SS in Sains like slot machines though:(, putting in 40p and 40p for bread every few days if whoopsies are unreliable. Perhaps I ought to go '45p womble' route, even though 'losing 5p' - though not a special journey for just that. I can walk to one of my Ss whilst, in practice, I need to drive to get to Mr A. Even there, despite the petrol cost, I think it is cheaper to shop in A.

Potatoes £2 from M (though not available at present).
    Bread 40p from S.
Milk usually from A, by itself. Although, this afternoon, from M, just this once:rotfl:.
Apples - may pick up from M cheaper next time. Or with a womble in A (but very expensive:eek: - uses up quite an amount. I think 'best' is Russet Apples at £1 and SP Pears 59p at the moment in there but you do need more variety than that. Apples packs are generally bigger and better price in M (non-comp. sadly)).

Good luck reducing your spending Elaine. I think there's a lot of us on the thread who are pretty wise shoppers and stashers and we are all at the same point in the Glitchy Life cycle:rotfl:

  • I was looking at the detailed points transactions on the website, which don't equate to my biscuit shops (none pending) or what's on the receipts (points total still under 100k), and added up the points total is now more than 100k; but the silver-and-green wheel on the left is three-quarters full and says 'Just 1,250 points to your next voucher'.
Not at all sure what is happening, but hey-ho!:)
Might risk one more biscuit shop and see what happens.
Well I didn't do a biscuit shop; they are luxuries, and I decided to stick to the essentials - wine and chillies (two of the essential foodgroups:)).
So, bought 2 bottles of McGuigan Pinot Grigio (1,500 More Points each) and a jar of Very Lazy Chillies (500 More Points, 470 Match Points).
Receipt says 'Match & More Points earned today: 470 Match Points; 3500 More Points' - which matches what I bought.
The points haven't appeared on the website but this is currently displaying Points 'as of 9 hours ago', so the Points either haven't been added, or the website hasn't updated yet.
Will report back if there's any change to Points total, or update time.
