ME was a stopgap with Many Errors until XP was released 24 Aug 2001
I had the misfortune of upgrading my PC in 2001 to Windows ME. Oh god the blue screens still give me nightmares, probably (in my experience anyway) the worst OS MS have released in 15 years. If my post helped you in anyway, please hit the "Thanks" button! Please note any advice I give is followed at your own risk!0 -

Yup, I was just thankful for all the leaks of the new code like Neptune and Whistler.0 -

Now you're taking me back! I can generally tell who has been around XP by asking them if they recognise this:

He can have both a PC and another unit you know.

So they're giving it away free..
Does that mean it's an upgrade to Windows 8?
A service pack?
Windows 8.2?
"Will this one have a start button?" The entire business community is asking...
Otherwise this one will be just another huge flop...0 -

Its not Free its a free upgrade if you upgrade in the first year, after that you pay for the upgrade.
Think of it a little like the NHS, it may be free at the point of use, but you pay for it in NI contributions. In a similar way Buy a new PC and some of the cost of the device will be to Microsoft for the licence.
Windows 8 is not just about the start button issue for businesses, its about the not insignificant cost of recoding a lot of applications to work in a new OS, the underlying change in drives and system management and the training costs to teach people the new interface.
One of the major reasons that there is a lot of XP still out there is there are apps that need IE6 and won't work in anything higher, until they are remediated there's no hope of going to 7 never mind 8 or 10.
Businesses with large installed bases have to balance the cost of an upgrade verses what they get, and in many cases there's not enough benefits to justify the change, its certainly not because there's no start button.0 -
The money is no longer in the OS, the 'Apps' and online cloud services will make Microsoft millions later on. That's what they are banking on.0
