He quite keen to get a laptop as it'd be portable and he could use it, for example in the conservatory or living room rather than being restricted to the desk in his study. WRONG again.
you have Win 98 and then yes they brought out Win 98 SE and within a month they rebranded it ME with a nice silver holographic disc. ME was a special edition of 98 SE
Huh?
98 SE was released about a year after 98, it would be more akin to being 98 Service pack 1, like Windows 8.1 is Windows 8 with SP1 on it.
ME was a new release about a year after Windows 98 SE, it was not 98 SP2 in any real way.
ME was supposed to be the start of using the same core of the operating systems rather than the two cores ie not having the home 9x types Os's and the work NT variants.
ME added in a lot of feature from Windows 2000, but due to other projects being cancelled it was rushed out and a pigs ear, and the unified code base came in in Windows XP.0 -

It is you who is wrong yet again!
Windows 98 - 15 May 1998
Windows 98 SE - 5 May 1999.
Windows ME - 14 September 2000.
ME was a stopgap with Many Errors until XP was released 24 Aug 2001
You just seem to want to argue using your new user id after being previously banned from here.
You haven't been missed because you add no value here with your petty silly arguments and you wont be missed if you slink off again to your own fantasy world away from MSE.
You are best put on ignore.

Happy to hear this news, as I have a Win 7 desktop and an 8.1 Laptop.
I bought the full install (not upgrade) DVD of Win 7, and I have recovery disks for the 8.1 laptop.
Planning to upgrade them both to Windows 10, but I'm wondering what happens if I have to rebuild one of those after the year of the free upgrade? I'd have the 7/8.1 installation media, but then could I upgrade again for free? Hmmmmmm0 -
It's probably worth everyone reading this recent Microsoft Windows 10 FAQ, which answers a LOT of questions!0

But make people awareThis unofficial FAQ is intended to provided details and clarification about these exciting changes coming to Windows in 2015.0 -
Am I wrong in thinking that it takes about a year after first release to get settled with necessary updates/fixes/patches etc, so there will be benefit in not upgrading right away? A last minute rush before the free year expires?0

This is probably the reason why MS have chosen to go with a free Windows model this time, they know that people have more choices than ever for OS, and that many of them are available at no cost.0
