Microsoft is planning a big push for Windows 10 and will be giving away the new operating system to Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8 users in the first year of release.

Win 10 will be such a leap forward that 9 would be superfluous. ;)

Looks like there's a public "technical preview" version of Windows 10 available for download too.

The privacy policy is interesting... You wouldn't want to do anything but beta test the OS! Open a file or look at a "private" website and Microsoft will be peering over your shoulder!

The word is that they're skipping 9, to avoid possible confusion (people and software) with 95 & 98...

The way I read it is that if you upgrade during the first 12 months after release it will be free, and if you upgrade after 12 months it will cost. I don't believe it is free for a year of use and chargeable thereafter.

There's a two-hour Microsoft Windows 10 video presentation for you to watch at http://news.microsoft.com/windows10story/, so you can take notes for any future posts!

The latest Technical Preview build is quite stable, BTW.

Nope...No subscription planned for the OS. As AlecEiffel says, free to upgrade during the first year of release for W7, W8 and W8.1 users. If you upgrade after that you will have to pay for the OS.....As you do now.
XP users are being left behind, no real surprise there.
