Saab - yes or no

  • The 2.2tid engine is actually very reliable and given correct maintenance should give over 200,000 without blinking. Chain cam engine, no DPF or DMF. Sometimes need the EGR cleaning or replacing if not doing big mileage. The Saab 9-5 is a very comfortable long-distance motorway barge and should give something like 45 mpg on a long run, 40 mpg normal use.
  • It was the 2.5td that was BWM engined, my memory returned .
I do Contracts, all day every day.

    2.5TD engined what?

I don't remember there being a BMW engined 2.5TD Saab 9-5. Or indeed any Saab for that matter.

That's the donk that went in Omegas and Range Rovers and is an inline 6

Only diesels Saab ever used were Isuzu 2.2, Fiat 1.9 and Isuzu 3.0 v6.

That's the one I was thinking of. Never used in a Saab AFAIK (as per AdrianC's post above).
  • And don't touch the 3.0tid. That way lies madness.

The 2.2 diesel was an Isuzu lump, pre-common rail. When it was replaced by the 1.9, that was felt to be a big step forward, but the 1.9 is a lot more complex, and does have some weak spots.

I'd have no qualms at all. Comfortable, very civilised, well built, and unusual.

So the 2.2 and 3.0 are Isuzu engines?

    Do you have a link?

I thought the 2.2 was just a development of the old 2.0dti which was also a little bit agricultural and also longer lived than the 1.9cdti.

Though when abused the 2.0dti can go through turbos.

    That was a great engine.

Not as powerful in the Omega as in the 525tds or 525td but lovely and smooth.

Was prone to cracking the long metal pipe connected to the EGR.

I still think the X22DTH was developed by Opel in Germany, at least I believe the head and block were.

Anybody know of a website with the appropriate info?
