Why do I need to pay for returning a faulty item.

As it was an Amazon Market place seller I would expect it to be genuine.
Buying from an Amazon marketplace seller isn't any guarantee that the goods are genuine.

Irrespective of it being Amazon it has a good chance of being fake. Amazon do not check the origin of items sold on their Marketplace and fakes are rife throughout the site (as reported on BBC Watchdog last year).
In terms of the cost of return, where the goods are faulty, incomplete, or incorrect the cost of returns it to be met by the seller in all cases. This is as per the consumer contracts regulations (previously Distance Selling Rules) and cover all items sold online including Amazon and Amazon Marketplace. This is valid irrespective of where the goods are being posted too. In the case of high value items I would highly recommend that you ask the seller to collect or provide pre-paid postage labels via a trackable means.
If all else fails you can open a claim via Amazon (called A to Z guarantee) for any postage not refunded (or anything else for that matter). Sellers are petrified of these as they can be heavily penalised by Amazon if they receive one and don't resolve the matter quickly.0 -

Well, pleased to say Amazon came up trumps. Seller refused to pay return postage stating that the bracelet wasn't faulty so contacted Amazon. After three messages to seller and two to Amazon I received a full refund under the A to Z guarantee, Amazon opened the case on my behalf, unbeknown to me, and I received the refund after about three hours.
I will now try to make sure in future that anything I buy from Amazon is their own stock and not from a dodgy market place seller, not implying that all market place sellers are dodgy, problem is that most of what I'm looking to buy is not stocked by Amazon.0
