Why do I need to pay for returning a faulty item.

I have bough a Clock on Amazon (from private seller) which unfortunately is faulty.
The seller is happy to accept the return but expects me to pay for postage.
Now I don't understand why if the item is faulty I would not be put in to the same position as before purchase has happened?
I would totally accept if it was me just changing my mind and returning the item because of it.
But why I should suffer finacial loss because of the sellers fault?
Thank you all for your answers.

You shouldn't with a business seller but with a private sale it's a civil matter between you. SOGA won't help with private sales so it's a case of hoping the seller does the right thing.0

That's what I meant. Didn't really know there were so many different types of sellers.
