Why do I need to pay for returning a faulty item.

Sorry
No worries. A private sale is when you buy from someone who isn't acting in the course of a business (ie if I was selling some of my own stuff or an occasional unwanted gift) - when you buy from a private seller you do not have all the same rights as when you buy from a business. It is important to use the right term because the legal position (and so any advice you get) will be different.
As someone else mentioned above, you should go through the amazon returns process and when asked the reason for the return say the item is faulty. You should not be responsible for the cost of return postage.
edit: advise the seller that they are responsible for the cost of return postage because the item is faulty and ask for a pre-paid label or for them to arrange collection of the item.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -

Is it anywhere in T&C of Amazon that sellers have to pay for a return postage, so I could point that out to a seller?0

It is nothing to do with Amazon's terms and conditions, it is to do with The Sale of Goods Act. This act adds terms and conditions into your contract with a UK business when you buy goods from them (but doesn't apply to foreign businesses). One such term that is added is that the seller is responsible for all costs involved with dealing with faulty goods (including postage).0 -
I am having the same problem. Bought a Pandora bracelet from market place seller which is faulty, charms won't screw on as thread is faulty. I used the Amazon returns system stating the above fault, seller has now emailed me with returns address but no mention of refunding the postage.
Unfortunately the matter is further complicated as the bracelet was postd in Thailand, taking three weeks to arrive, but the returns address is in France.0 -
A Pandora bracelet with dodgy manufacture and coming from Thailand!
The chances of that being genuine are about the same as me being the real George Michael.
Instead of returning it for a refund (which you may never get), you might be better off seeing if you can confirm if it is fake:

and then trying for a refund by way of chargeback or paypal dispute depending on how you originally paid.0 -

As it was an Amazon Market place seller I would expect it to be genuine.0
