Tewkesbury floods leave Abbey bank customers up creek
By Paul Gosling
Published: 31 July 2007
Hundreds of customers of the Abbey bank will be without valid debit cards tomorrow, as the impact of the floods spreads.
The manufacturer of Abbey's debit cards is in Tewkesbury and had to cease production as staff were unable to work during the worst of the flooding.
Abbey's customers whose existing debit cards expire today may find they have to wait until later this week before their new cards arrive, preventing them withdrawing funds from cash machines or using cards for store purchases.
"Customers should take out some extra cash [today] just in case," suggested an Abbey spokesman.
He said that "a few hundred" customers were affected, while most awaiting replacement cards should find their cards arrive in time. "Most were sent out before the floods," he said.
Abbey declined to identify the manufacturer involved, but said the problem was caused by staff not being able to work for two days. The bank's spokesman defended the delay in sending out the cards and denied difficulties had been caused by sending out cards too close to expiry dates.
"It's hard to anticipate something like this," he said. "It's probably the only time in recent history there has been this kind of interruption. Floods are not forseeable. We have runs of tens of thousands of cards and probably a couple hundred will be delayed."Please do not feed the Trolls!0 -
It is totally true about the floods affecting the production of some banks/BS cards. The compnay i think is called oberfur or something like and it is based in Tewkesbury and they have had to deal with skeleton staff during the floods.Because a lot of their staff are local they have had to deal with their own problems so have not been able to work.
But from the sounds of it Abbey are using it as their excuse0 -

Pretty good idea eh?
That might help some people but for the fact that you cannot access your internet banking if the debit card has run out!0 -

It was in the Evening Standard and as far as I could see when I search, it is the only paper that had the story.
simgranny, if you are using Abbbey, you can still use your online banking. Your 16 digit number will always remain the same. I've just used mine and paid the Mortgage and other bills, so you can transfer money from one acount to another
P.S..STILL no card for meeeeee !!!Please do not feed the Trolls!0 -
I'm not sure the Evening Standard is widely available in rural Leicestershire

Thanks for that, I took another look and it asks for the card no OR personal id. I imagine you used your personal id - we couldn't get it to work with the old card number.
Unfortunately, neither of us have a personal id as far as we know because we keep on forgetting passwords pin nos etc. But it might be worth us getting one in case this ever happens again.0
