Help! Just discovered 16 months of MBNA charges despite monthly payments

Btw - they haven't reduced the credit so there is some left on the card.0

Sorry Leeroy, I wasn't referring to you. And I completely understand this comment: "So you've admitted in your post that it was your fault, and yet you want MBNA to shoulder your mistake? The best course of action is to pay the charges and interest, realise you made a mistake and learn from it, and then move on with life."
…But it doesn't really help does it? I feel stupid enough. In fact I wouldn't have come on here but I did think someone might have had some success in a similar situation in the past so it was worth a punt...0 -

confirms ybs post, in that they are not treating this as a "serious" incident, as they are happy to take the late fees and interest, you do need to see whats been reported to the cras though.0 -
The 0% rate never existed in the first place. As soon as they'd paid late it was withdrawn. OP has been paying interest since day 1 (and they said so in post #1...16 x £40 is £640. Add in the £12 fees and there's the £800 they mentioned).leeroy2009 wrote: »and sorry to mae things sound worse, but i take it the 0% deal is coming to a end, and when it does i believe it will revert to 19.9% apr interest.0 -
your 100% correct ignore my mutterings.YorkshireBoy wrote: »The 0% rate never existed in the first place. As soon as they'd paid late it was withdrawn. Have you actually contacted MBNA about any of it yet?
Put simply, you're getting the replies you are because you have very little recourse here. You can either:
Take your mistake on the chin and pay the interest and charges you've racked up
Or
Call MBNA, explain the situation, and ask (ASK) if there's anything they can do to help you, which unfortunately is unlikely.
Yes, MBNA have a requirement to tell you about issues with late payments and charges you're accruing, this is what monthly statements are for, you choosing not to look at them isn't MBNA's fault.
Every credit card I've ever had also says somewhere (usually many times) that they advise you setup a direct debit for the minimum payment to avoid the risk of late payments etc, and I imagine MBNA are no different. You choosing not to do this and rely on your own setup of a standing order instead is, again, not MBNA's fault.
I would be approaching them very much cap in hand hoping for the best and expecting the worst if I were you, unfortunately no-one can really suggest more than that.0 -
Many people have reported some success with MBNA on a similar point. The difference between them and you is that they noticed after a month or two...not nearly a year and a half later!Deleted_Users4 wrote: »...but I did think someone might have had some success in a similar situation in the past so it was worth a punt...
Those people managed to get a rate of 1.9% APR going forward (rather than the original 0% rate), and a refund of a late payment fee...but not the reporting of the late payment to the CRAs or interest already charged.
I suspect your credit history for this account will show as:
1111111111111111U
Which isn't going to look too good to other lenders you ask for credit. And there's no way MBNA are going to go back and change it because it is an accurate account of your payments.
This is all about goodwill. You might get something...but not much so don't build your hopes up.0 -
thank god grumblers in bed op, they would of had a field day with this.0
-
And one final thing, MBNA will probably refer you to your T&Cs, which will almost certainly say something along the lines of...
"Each month we will produce a statement and make it available to you.
You must check your statement and report any issues to us immediately"
You might wish to have an answer ready for this, although it'll be hard to find a valid reason for not doing so for 16 months!
Look on the bright side though...if there had been a fraudulent transaction on the account 14 months ago you'd have been in a far worse situation now!0 -
Thank you. I haven't contacted MBNA yet as I discovered the error about 20mins before posting this. Of course I will call them first thing in the morning.
Wasn't there a lot in the news some time back about being able to claim back late payment charges? Or am I getting confused again?
Seriously, I don't know much about this subject because I've never been in a situation like this before. I didn't own a credit card for years and years until I decided to get this one. And once I'd set it all up, I honestly thought all was well. At the time of getting this card I was working, looking after my family and completing a Masters degree. Getting it all set up and then putting a date in the diary to transfer the balance was actually quite well organised for me in the circumstances so this has come as something of a nasty shock!0
