Tesco grocery delivery soaked in bleach

Hi! Advice needed please!
I received a grocery delivery last week and as I was bringing in my bags from the boxes on my doorstep I could smell bleach, I didn't really think anything of it and continued to load my shopping into my lounge. Being his usual duty, my 5 year old helps me by bringing the shopping bags from the lounge into the kitchen where I unload. He proceeded to find the multi pack crisps and open them for a bag of crisps and watched telly whilst I finished unloading. A little later he came into the kitchen where I noticed he had stains down the front of his jumper and his sleeve. Bleach stains! I then realised the only thing he had handled were the crisps and pulled the multi pack out to find it drenched in liquid bleach. I had not ordered bleach nor was it in my delivery. I have now discovered I have stains on my trousers, boots a rug aswell as my 5 year old jumper and on his socks (I'm guessing the bleach was trodden through). We have quarry tiles luckily!
I contact customer services immediately who explained I would need to speak to a duty manager at the branch where the shopping delivery comes from. I made several calls one lady stated 'I'm not really sure what we can do about that'. Finally a received a call from customer services again to tell me to take all stained items into the store, bearing in mind it's a 30 minute (minimum) drive. I took the items into store and after speaking to various customer service employees have been told to replace all items (at my cost) and to then return to the store (at my cost) with the receipts and the old items where they will take my old items and decide on the refund!!! The lady that gave this information approached my query with a screwed up facial expression and asked where the damaged bleach was (bearing in mind i didn't order bleach and bleach wasn't in my delivery)! 😡 She proceeded to tell me it's ok up to the limit of £250 but any more than that it'll be a problem and generally made me feel like I was a liar. I feel Tesco have left me with a problem of bleach stained items (dread to think of my 5 year old had ingested it or if my dog had walked on it) I have been made to feel like a problem and now I'm having to replace all the stained items at my cost!

I'm sorry it's a bit long winded... Please, if anyone has any advice... I would be greatful!

Are you not going to have to replace the items anyway?

Replace them and take them back to tesco for a refund, if its over £250 as is their limit then get quotes and write a formal letter to the store asking reimbursement. Make a note of your mileage involved and ask for reimbursement for this.

Ask for a small gesture of good will for the hassle and then move on with life.

You could also ask them to put it in writing with regards the refund totals etc.

I don't really know how else you expect them to quantify your loss.

Tesco need proof that you have replaced the items, nOt bought something ELse with the money.

£250 is probabaly tha maximumamoun the store can refund. Over that amount it may ahve to be submitted to thier insurance company who will want to investigate fully and may make an adjustment for items being 'used. It will probably take longer to rsolve.

However, if your replacements do not cost more than £250 that is irrelevant to your case.

What do you want Tesco to do?

There was another one within the last few weeks (at least pretty sure it was tesco) but it wasnt a home delivery. They had taken the bags from the car into the kitchen with the help of their young son - was no bleach in the car/outside, just once it got into the house.

General consensus (again from what I remember) was that it had likely been knocked when being brought into the house rather than being damaged in the shop else there would have been bleach in the car also.

It does seem a semi regular problem for Tesco, this thread rang a bell for me too.

This thread from 2011 is the one I remember : https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3604389

And this is another from 2005 : https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/75145

Never posted about it but I had this same problem with tesco back in November, albeit my delivery contained the bleach and it was their delivery guy who spotted it.

OP write a formal letter to tesco head office, no you so not HAVE to replace the goods as such and I would not do a thing without something in writing from tesco. Send a letter before action with a copy of claim form n1 which you should be prepared to lodge in court in 21 days. (Tell them 14 in original letter, don't include n1 at that stage. Send them a further 7 day letter with copy. Then when the deadline has passed (28 days from date of first letter lodge the claim in court); it should never get to the stage of court because they will make you am offer but you might need to force their arm a bit especially with their current financial "difficulties".

Good luck with your claim I'm sure Tesco will cooperate.

But why take shopping into lounge first would it not be easier to unload directly in kitchen?
