  • I opened a Barclays account and was able to view my PIN online. When the card came I went out to the cashpoint and changed in immediately so no problem with when the PIN arrived.

Yes, it is theoretically possible that someone is intercepting your post, opening the letters, noting down the details of your new card, re-sealing it, then waiting for the PIN to arrive a few days later.

No system is 100% safe - you just have to trust that 99.999% is safe enough in the real world. You could insist on travelling to bank HQ and picking up your post in person. But you might find that someone has stolen your identity and beaten you to it.

    :)

I thought a PIN and card were supposed to come a few days apart?

They would have been sent at separate times, but once they hit the RM system the banks have no control over when they will be delivered in separate envelopes

I can appreciate that, but I only opened the Halifax account 3 working days ago, so they hardly left any time before issuing the card and pin.
Bear in mind they were both sent out 2nd class.

If it's a security measure to send them out seperatly then they should leave a few days gap in between issuing them. Then they would have less chance of catching up with each other in the post. I though that was how it worked?

Sorry if I sound paranoid but I have had problems with dishonest postal workers in the past.

Yes, I have opened 3 accounts this last week BUT with different banks so I can't see this being an issue.

Because they could have been stolen and my account could have been emptied...
And I could just be sat here wondering when my card and pin are going to show up....

Personally, I don't fund new accounts with any more than £1 or £2 until they are fully set up, and I have all cards / pins / security tokens etc in my possession. Just a thought for next time.
  • Quite a lot of bank letters are sent by TNT - if you do not have a TNT delivery in your area they will be dumped on Royal Mail to be delivered.
This could explain why they arrived together or it could just be chance.

Had anything untoward happened then surely the cards and PINS would never have been delivered because somebody would be out spending on them?

In theory they could come on the same day, they don't come in the same envelope is the point the card issuer will stipulate.

But if your card and PIN has arrived safely then what is the issue? Change the PIN number.

If anyone was going to itercept your post they could quite easily intercept each item if they arrived on seperate days also.

What next? Is it normal for a cheque/cash to come in the same envelope as my birthday card??

No as security they just need to send them in separate envelopes, even sending them on f#diff days, they could still end being delivered at the same time

very unlikely they would be linked together with the amount of mail the bank would send out and the amount going through sorting offices.
