stopped after work today and put £35 of fuel using my credit card at sainsburys pay at pump. Earlier I was checking my credit card account online and it showed i had about £100 less than I should on my available balance. Confused I phoned up Lloyds who informed me that there was £99 approval pending, after some investigation it appears that the transaction was at the same time I filled up. I was told to see if the amount went out on monday and my balance go back to what it should be.

Apparently it happens according to the guy at lloyds card services, the garage approve £99 but only take the amount you actually filled up with a few days later.

I completed the transaction so noone else could of filled up using my card after, plus i doubt the fuel tank on my fiesta could hold £99 of fuel!

Has this happened to anyone else? Quite !!!!ed off, I have a modest credit limit on this card luckily, however it would of been embarrasing to have my card declined else where later due to them taking £99 and reducing my available spending balance.

  • When you put the card in, guessing it says approved up to X , Prob £99, Its kind of like a hold /deposit, i imagine in a day or so you will just see the £35 quid you spent,

if you hadnt looked at your online trasnactions for a few days you wouldnt have even noticed it, Hotels do it to if you pre-authroize a tab up to X amount,

they have put a pre authorisation on your card up to the max that you are allowed to draw, in most cases £99.00

what will happen is they will charge the £35.00 to your card and the pre authorisation will drop off

they havent taken the money they have put a hold on it

Which amounts to the same thing if you need access to that balance in the meantime. ;)

well if you need access to that money then dont use pay at the pump or use any other type of service that places a hold on your card

What the vendor ought to do, and some do it properly, is cancel the pre-authorised transaction immediately they have an actual delivery transaction.

The absolute pits place for this is an automatic Carrefour place on the edge of Calais. For 3 visits in 2 months it produced no paper receipts, but that's minor. On my last ever visit it pre-authorised on a pump then would not deliver anything. Same on another pump and still nothing. In the end the gits borrowed about £400 off me for nearly a month and all for just 13 cents worth of fuel. If the place was empty why on earth didn't it switch the pumps off and say so? I asked their customer services to cancel off the pending transactions, and got a load of time-wasting drivel and refusal in return.

Sounds like its nothing out of the ordinary except other supermarket p@p pfs do it different.

Tesco pre-authorise £1 at their pay at the pump for me. Sometimes the £1 stays on for a few days after the full amount of fuel comes off.

Is it a Solo card? When I used to have one I'd have to spend at least £20 for the correct balance to be held, otherwise they'd hold about £100 until the transaction went through.
