as a follow up to this
I have been helped to gain access to the system ,
now just a simple question: is there a hard drive limitation , or indeed a folder limitation on Linux.
is it possible to create a subdirectory (as I have just managed) and copy 500 gig of files in it?0 -
Yes google is your friend ....people on this forum help others , and don't ask for abuse. I could help but am not inclined until I receive a sort of apology to my friend ....
!!!!!! freddie it's not difficult. Just create a new directory in the target and if it is the shared top level directory no problems if not you need to create a symlink in the root of the shared folder(directory)
egcd /"name of shared directory" ln -s whatever /dev/sdxx where " should not be typed and /dev/sdxx/directory = sdb1 or whatever is relevant to the new disk
Oh and you shouldn't hit limits on file sizes either .....
Oh and is the new partition NTFS ? (I would use extfs2/3)0 -
thank you , there is no choice of partition when using the install USB key , its all automated .
thanks for the info on the file limit, I don't particularly want to learn Linux (Microsoft is enough)
I won't apologise to you , as you seem to have fired back a lot of abuse to me , however I am happy to put this to one side , and try not to get involved in posting you are helping.

How did you format the external disk ?0

the intel nuc only has one internal fixed drive , I am streaming from a Dlink dnl320l , which is (I believe) a Linux system , and this can be seen easily in windows either on the the network or as a shared drive.
I can also plug pendrives ,cards or usb drives into the nuc , either fat , exfat , or ntfs and the nuc will read them. it will also play from films held on my NTFS computer drive..
having just filled the sub directory with 20 g of films , openelec shows this as used space ,
as mentioned , I would like to swop the drive for a 1t 2.5 drive and make the unit self contained and portable (take it to work , power and hdmi lead = nice day at work).
I did not want to spend £50+ getting a WD red drive and the idea failing0 -
OK I think I understand , so I assume you can use the NUC using an HDMI monitor and using a USB Keyboard/mouse to install the openelec distro from a USB stick? So if that is the case then you could swap the new 1TB disk into the NUC and re-install openelec onto that ?enfield_freddy wrote: »the intel nuc only has one internal fixed drive , I am streaming from a Dlink dnl320l , which is (I believe) a Linux system , and this can be seen easily in windows either on the the network or as a shared drive.

Otherwise if you have the option to access the new disk from a PC then we could try from there too0 -
yes , changing the drive is a 2 min job , lots of photos here (easier to let you see , rather than describe it)https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=intel+nuc+inside&biw=1409&bih=923&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=OP62VOqoO4LC7gbJkYDIBw&sqi=2&ved=0CCAQsAQ
basicly remove lover case , slide old new drive out and slide new one in.
reloading is a ten min job , so is setting up network (wireless and lan) , setting up libraries , even 700m of films takes 45 mins , inc scraping to get dvd covers.
the thing can be operated by a wireless mouse or a xbox 360 (?) remote.
I tried the "droid" boxes on ebay etc , they were slow , this one is on steroids !
setup properly , you can stream UK freeview TV channels (about 30s delay - no tv licence req!) and access to millions of films ,
cheers

EDIT:
"Otherwise if you have the option to access the new disk from a PC then we could try from there too "
yup , by adding that subfolder , I am able to add/delete films or music I have added , this is good
keep thinking , the libraries it has created are purely links to the supplying drive ,0 -
OK then I need to wait for someone from the station and won't be back until tomorrow, but will try to come back then. But if you keep the "old" drive then install the new one and re-install openelec on to that we can see where to go.0

ok cheers , will be a couple of days before I can get a drive , it looks like my idea (with programme help from you) will work.
googling shows ext3 and ext4 drives far exceeding what I need ,
thinking: the nas drives are ext3 or 4 , and they are upto 4g or even 6g ,0
