2. remain seated in your vehicle with your seatbelt on inc passengers, don't get out opening doors into the path of traffic or walk along the carriage way or motor way, police or highways agency will come to your vehicle, roll down your window to communicate with the constable or highways agency and listen for any further instructions they give to you.
3. upon request produce your driving documents license, valid MOT, insurance certificate, a PCSO told me if your documents are digital, then inform the constable that your documents are online only documents and you have no physical paper certificate the constable will perform the necessary checks they have available to them with the available information given by you and not go into your phone or tablet device to retrieve them as its quicker for the constable to check it through calling MIB.
4. follow instruction from the constable, if he wishes to speak to you in his vehicle exit the passenger side of the vehicle (if on a motorway or dual carriageway) or if this is not possible the constable will instruct you when its safe to open you door and get out, you should not walk near the flow of traffic, when possible move to the passenger side of the vehicle don't stand behind your vehicle or that of the constables, if you require documents from your boot or vehicle when outside or in the constables vehicle ask the officer to retrieve them for you if he is able to do so.
police get suspicious and ofcourse cautious if you don't turn off your engine, they also get suspicious your hiding something or trying to divert their attention away from your vehicle by getting out and going over to them, more often than not from what ive seen unless police wish to speak to you in the back of their car, they will get out and walk you back to your car anyway and pay closer attention to you and go more indepth with things with you, or if theres a safety risk to you then give a shouting at to get back in your car and wait for them like your supposed to do.Spicy_McHaggis wrote: »Sorry but so much of that is wrong.
NO IT SHOULD READ as above if you care to follow post numbers. care to elaborate in your response "sorry but so much of that is wrong" in response to reply post quoting my post!.0 -
It's many years since I was stooped. On that occasion the PC told me that I should not have got out of my car for my own safety. The drill for a lone female driver should be, he said, to stay in the car with the doors locked until shown ID, then do as requested.0

Some interesting thoughts here, and it's made me think about the topic for probably the first time in my life.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I have been driving a long time and I am reasonably alert, and yet I have never seen anything official about what to do if stopped. It's news to me (but interesting all the same) that if you get out of your car the police might think you have something to hide. My first reaction is that if you remain in your car you come across as a lazy individual who can't be bothered to stand up to speak to someone. (I am of the generation that still feels it right to stand up if a lady enters the room.) It seems there is no 'right' answer, so I will stick with what my instructor taught me many years ago:
Speak face to face, be polite, co-operate, and don't be a !!!!!!.
(Agreed, rules for a lone female would be very different.)If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
I concur. Switch off the engine, get out, walk over to speak to them (in a manner that shows due consideration for safety, avoiding the carriageway as appropriate). Put on your finest Churchill accent and be friendly and polite. Remove any impression of wrongdoing from your character (which is inevitably why you've been stopped in the first place).
Or you could just stay in the car and wind the window down, and create absolutely no distraction from the fact that you have been pulled over for driving like a !!!!!!.0 -
People who don't put seatbelt on are usually the same people who don't bother to indicate or notice when the speed limit increases to 40mph.
All of that is automatic to me.0 -

If you are a law abiding citizen, you pull over in a safe spot, get out of the car and walk back to passenger side of the Police car. When the Police pull you over, it isn't their first time and all that time-wasting they do before hauling themselves out of the car and taking their time to eyeball every part of your car and you as they saunter towards you is a practiced event. The guilty fell guiltier and their bodies can't help themselves with the tells.
If you approach them in an open and friendly manner, you invade their space and they are on the back foot.
Caution: Do not do this if you are guilty or are driving a heap.0
