These are work emails and I have no idea on policy, obviously I can't mention it as I can't be seen to suspect anything!!

Then they have every right to read them!

If you try to interfere with the email program and manage to block your boss from reading company emails you're likely to find yourself out of a job.

Thanks all, I have nothing to hide at all it's just the sneakyness (If that's a word) of it all I don't like

Your boss has every right to know everything you do during working hours.

Sending communications with content you don't want him to know about is sneaky.

  • The only thing to do is contact your union/staff association to see what the company policy actually is on email use.

I always assumed that the company could check emails I sent from work, as monitoring is usually done on a network level.

Trying to download some application in an attempt to block this would make it look as if you have something to hide. Your boss would likely confront you about it.

Any personal views I had to convey used to be 'word of mouth' outside the office

Or find the company policy and read it.

I get emails from one company where their email policy is attached to the end of every email.

Just think, if they did not monitor emails and computer use, then someone could in effect plant a virus through email attachment or even copy the whole company database then set up and undercut them as they would have all their clientbase.
I think you will find all companies will have a policy where computer activity is monitored
  • You certainly can't stop someone from accessing your emails once they have reaced your computer. Most likely, if they are being monitored they would be so before they arrived in your Outlook.

As said above I would expect something in either your contact of employment to outline what the companys privacy policys are for employees.

In theory you could digitally sign your emails. That way only you and the recipient could read them, but you'd need to share your digital public key with them. But if you started doing this then you'd be flagging yourself up for closer monitoring.

Maybe casually ask you boss "So how exactly are you able to see my emails? Have I done something against company policy? Is there anything in my work behaviour that I need to adjust?"

Yes they would do this, but they would also monitor emails sent from their system and inter departmental emails.

If they never monitored emails being sent out then what is stopping an employee sending out spam using the companies mailserver, so in effect risking the companies computer system being shut down for spamming.

as they say BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU
  • Thanks everyone I'll just be extra careful what I send
  • Send an e-mail to someone that you work with and whom you trust and in that e-mail, tell them that you have just won a fortune on the lottery and you will be buying drinks for everyone on the local pub after work.
Go to the pub and see who else turns up for a freebie.

Either that or in the e-mail just state that you think that you have an infection as "your bits" are very sore, inflamed and itchy and you can't stop scratching them.
The next day offer your boss a homemade cake and if they refuse, there's your proof!
