I would look at Freecycle (often a lot of sofas there!) local ads & charity shops.
I'd do this partly to save money, but also because over the years I have found that you are best to live awhile with less-than-perfect furniture. You really get to know what will suit you & your flat, and can then keep an eye out for bargains.
Throws are a great way to cover sofas: from charity shops, markets, or just a length of cheap fabric.0 -
I third Ikea too. We have the Tidafors range, 3 seater and 2 seater cost us Just over £800. They did require a bit of assembly but nothing complicated. They are really comfy and Ikea use nice foam in the bottom cushions (rather than the horrible fibre filling some sofas have).0

The John Lewis outlet is hit and miss. I've seen a few really good bargains there, but the sofas tend to have a bit of damage, which seems quite often to be grubby patches, i guess where they have been used in shop displays.
They do deliver, but it's quite pricy. I'm about 30 mins down the road and they wanted to charge me £30 delivery (it was for a desk) i jammed it in the back of my car instead!0 -
I had a brand new parker knoll 3 piece suite from our local charity shop for 200 pounds. Don't dismiss charity shops. Also look in you local free papers someone is always selling them.0

Beautiful 3 seater sofas from about £549.0 -
I had a horrible experience with SofaSofa/ Oakridge (based in Cardiff). The worst customer service ever. Cheap sofas - yes - looked shabby in six months. Lumpy cushions and the loose covers shrunk and ripped zipped after first wash. Provided photos and itemised issues. The ONLY solution they would offer was collecting ENTIRE sofa for an undeterimed time for an investigation (leaving me with nothing). Severa requests to engage with me for a reasonable solution (e.g collecting covers for "investigation". They kept repeating the same thing (by email) and even after I said in writing "I do not give you permission to take my sofas away" - they turned up in a lorry to my home, without discussion or agreement and tried to take them away (fully paid up - my property). I refused - we need seating for an elderly relative. To add insult to injury I get a rude email the next day saying they are "disappointed" in me and basically they have washed their hands of me. So beware - any issues - they will turn up and try and take your sofa away - even if it's a problem with a cushion. WORST customer experience I have had.0

We bought a small sofa (fake leather) for the kitchen for £250 from Argos. We wanted something cheap and cheerful as the dog sleeps on it/the kids spill stuff on it/hubby collapses on it in his grubby work clothes. We have had it two years now and it still looks as good as the day we bought it. Its surprisingly comfy too.0

If you can't get something nice for a grand then I don't know
That sort of money will get you nice things in the antiques arena.0 -
We bought 2 sofas from Sofasofa. We have never (over 50 years) known such poor quality, experienced such a relentless drive to not repay a good chunk of our money (despite the no quibble guarantee) and appalling 'customer service.'. Try to put a review on a site, and they hunt them down and complain to the site owner. The reviews you see around the net are almost all 5*. I lead you to draw your own conclusions.0
