Also i dare say a bank will have security checks on staff entering and leaving, so someone would have noticed a cashier with £1000 in their bag

Not of every member of staff, every night. Security checks will be random and few and far between.

    Hi,
I'm new to this but my complete outrage with Halifax bank has driven me to seek further help.

Last weekend I went to a local branch to withdraw £2500. (I do this this quite regularly). The cashier counted out £2500 in used twenty pounds notes, handed me a sealed envelope then looked into a query I had with my other debit card, then I left the branch.

The money wasn't needed till Monday so when I got home I left the sealed envelope on the mantelpiece. My husband opened the envelope on Monday morning to discover only £1500!!!!!!!!

I have been on the phone for days! I have escalated my complaint but the bank won't do anything. I have had £2500 taken from my account but only received £1500. They have checked the till in question and everything adds up so I am left with the conclusion that the cashier may have taken £1000. I have asked them to show me CCTV footage of the cashier putting all the money in the envelope but they don't have CCTV on their cashiers. I have been told that I should have paid more attention, should have checked the money and because I left the branch it is my fault! When I suggested that maybe the cashier took the money the lady from the complaint department said that I would have seen if she had taken the money and "£1000 isn't worth someone losing their job"!!!!:mad:

I will be writing to the Ombudsmen but Im left so frustrated and powerless against this huge company. Is there anything else I can do?

So they counted it out, put it in a sealed envelope infront of you and it can only be the cashier who has the money?

You openly state the money was left on the mantle piece for a period of time, isn't it just as likely this is where an amount of money has also disappeared?

The onus is not on the bank to prove they gave you the full amount, given they counted it out in front of you and you accepted it. They don't have to have cameras on the cashiers and the tills total up correctly...

Can't see the ombudsman having anything to do with your complaint to be honest, its full of holes in terms of the bank being 100% responsible.

Were you watching the cashier count out the notes and counting with them?

Were you also watching when the cashier put the notes in the envelope?

Do you not think you would have noticed if the cashier then counted out £1000 and didn't put that in the envelope.

Did you not notice at the time that the envelope wasn't as thick as usual (50 notes missing would have made a noticeable difference in weight and thickness to your usual envelope).

Your story would have been all the believable had it been a random figure missing, but £1000? Really? so exact for a 'crime of opportunity' don't you think?

So, just who had been in your house during the intervening period?

So you left £2500 in a sealed envelope sitting on your mantelpiece for a few days, and then discover £1000 missing - who else lives in your house other than you and your husband?

  • A few years ago a friend withdrew £1400 from a branch of Santander. When they received their statement some weeks later the amount debited was shown as £14000. They did have a copy of the withdrawal receipt however it was almost illegible (was a handwritten one not a printed one). Despite claiming immediately Santander never found any fault and after some months and legal intervention agreed to audit the accounts for the day - and found no funds unaccounted for.

Santander lost a lot of customers (word of mouth is very potent) and my friend lost £12,600.00
  • How can you watch them count it out, and not see that £1000 is missing?

Sadly, the person responsible in virtually all of these cases of 'missing money', is someone who lives in the house or visits the house.

Not sure why you would consider it unbelievable. 100% true!
