Bank shortfall -help!

Hi,
I'm new to this but my complete outrage with Halifax bank has driven me to seek further help.

Last weekend I went to a local branch to withdraw £2500. (I do this this quite regularly). The cashier counted out £2500 in used twenty pounds notes, handed me a sealed envelope then looked into a query I had with my other debit card, then I left the branch.

The money wasn't needed till Monday so when I got home I left the sealed envelope on the mantelpiece. My husband opened the envelope on Monday morning to discover only £1500!!!!!!!!

I have been on the phone for days! I have escalated my complaint but the bank won't do anything. I have had £2500 taken from my account but only received £1500. They have checked the till in question and everything adds up so I am left with the conclusion that the cashier may have taken £1000. I have asked them to show me CCTV footage of the cashier putting all the money in the envelope but they don't have CCTV on their cashiers. I have been told that I should have paid more attention, should have checked the money and because I left the branch it is my fault! When I suggested that maybe the cashier took the money the lady from the complaint department said that I would have seen if she had taken the money and "£1000 isn't worth someone losing their job"!!!! :mad::mad:

I will be writing to the Ombudsmen but Im left so frustrated and powerless against this huge company. Is there anything else I can do?

Whenever I have withdrawn cash from either my bank or a travel exchange the cashier has always counted it in front of me, placed it in a wallet/envelope if necessary, and then handed it to me/passed through the drawer system, along with a printed receipt. It has always been within my view and it would take a magician to have spirited it away. Was this not the case at the Halifax? As the till has not come up with more cash than it should contain I would be looking at where the cash was placed and who has had access to it as it is far easier to reveal an envelope than to "fiddle" a till and secrete a sizable number of notes about your person in view of the public and other staff.

Also i dare say a bank will have security checks on staff entering and leaving, so someone would have noticed a cashier with £1000 in their bag

Well surely if you believe the cashier stole the money, you should forget about the ombudsman and go to the police with your story!

My wife works in a bank and has told me that there are no routine security checks on employees when they leave.
If any cashier wanted to steal money, it wouldn't be too difficult for them to pass the cash to an accomplice posing as another customer.

Being a guy a grand of notes would not fit down the crack of my !!!!. If I tried the front end it would certainly make me look more excited than normal!

There's a post on the other thread which I think is bang on the money. Ask your husband what he's done with the grand.

Where you were you looking when the money was counted out at the bank? I hardly think your eyes wondered around like withdrawing £2500 was nothing. You would have had a constant view and it would have been impossible if so for the full amount not to have gone in. As the other thread has said, ask you husband.
