    It will depend where the vents are for the warm air being expelled from the laptop or cool air to be drawn in. If they are on the bottom then there is a very real risk of overheating if it is used on a malleable surface such as a duvet, or not allowed to rest on the "feet" to give a few mm of clearance such as when used on your lap. If they are on the back or sides then the risk is much reduced.

    That may well be a good point, the vents on mine are indeed on the side and back, so they're really not obstructed when the computer is on my lap.
