Help Please For Daughter

My daughter has worked all morning on her laptop doing uni work when suddenly the laptop shut down, when she turned it back on there was a message saying that it had overheated. Now she cant find the work she has done, she had not saved it as it shut down without warning. She was using word 2010 is there anyway she can get this work back? She is devastated as it has to be in by tonight. Any help very much appreciated.

  • Some more recent versions (I think 2010 is included, but don't quote me on it) have an auto-save function.
  • I am very sorry this has happened. In future advise your daughter to save her work to at least 2 other places as she goes along.

That's only if that option is turned on (it is by default).
Assuming it is, try looking in the following folder (assuming Windows 7):-
    C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\

And tell her that 'laptop' is a bit of a misnomer. Placing it on your lap (without a lap tray), on a bed or indeed anything soft is likely to block the air intake vent holes and result in overheating. Laptop's should always be used on a hard flat surface.

When typing an essay or anything thats going to be a long time from opening to closing. Save it every 5 minutes or so.

    Glad to hear it.
I only know that because I've fallen foul of that particular "feature" of laptops before.

You could set it up to save every minute, if paranoid.
    Probably best to be paranoid!
