And tell her that 'laptop' is a bit of a misnomer. Placing it on your lap (without a lap tray), on a bed or indeed anything soft is likely to block the air intake vent holes and result in overheating. Laptop's should always be used on a hard flat surface.

Or buy a laptop cooler and work on that instead. I use them on both my laptops, keeps them at a healthy 35c operating temp.

You could set it up to save every minute, if paranoid.
    Probably best to be paranoid!

You could, but you'd never get anything done on a large document as everything stops when it autosaves. I think the default is 10 minutes which should be OK.

Auto save is fine - BUT there is always the danger that you get tired, make a major mistake, normally to do with cutting and pasting - Auto save comes along and saves the mistake opps! It is a good idea to save the work at least every 20 minutes as Essay1, then Essay2, then Essay3 don't delete Essay1 until you have saved Essay4. Also don't just save onto the one hard drive in the laptop use an external drive, a network drive, a usb flash memory stick or the cloud, (Dropbox or something similar). Also email yourself a copy. If it is important I would do all of the above.

You can keep saying this, and it's probably true to some extent, but the fact is that the majority of people will use their devices on their lap and not on a flat surface. I've been doing so on a pretty much daily basis for over 5 years with the laptop that I'm typing this on and it's still fine.

you're very lucky then, most machines would have given up and overheated before now without regular cleanouts.....

I bought a Logitech Comfort Lapdesk - great, I just lift it off the table, work on my lap, then back on my table. It holds the laptop at the perfect angle either on my lap or table. I think Belkin also make something similar.

You're thinking of the 'old' Auto-save, where it overwrote the original file every x minutes.

The current version (since at least Word/Excel 2007) is called Autorecover and saves it every x minutes (mine is set to 1) in a temporary file in the folder mentioned by rmg1, ie C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\.

Usually, it brings up the temporary file when you restart Word and give you the option to save it properly but, if it doesn't do that, you have to search for it. Successfully, in this case.

It will depend where the vents are for the warm air being expelled from the laptop or cool air to be drawn in. If they are on the bottom then there is a very real risk of overheating if it is used on a malleable surface such as a duvet, or not allowed to rest on the "feet" to give a few mm of clearance such as when used on your lap. If they are on the back or sides then the risk is much reduced.
