You can heat a mug full of water in the microwave, I do it every morning for my coffee. My kettle is now redundant.

Why wouldn`t you just boil a mugs worth , using your kettle?
Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

I bought a brand new kettle from tesco for £2.99 once, maybe they still have them.

The appliance of science . . . simply balance a breeze block on the switch to hold it down. No more achy finger
A blob of blue tac might be more convenient.

When I visit my sister she has made my coffee in the microwave for as long as I can remember.

I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

In the spirit of money saving - which method uses the least amount of energy?

Can you do that in a microwave too?

My guess is that a kettle would use less energy - it should be pretty damn efficient as the heating element is immersed in the water so there's nowhere for the heat to go except where you want it. Also, a typical kettle is more powerful than a typical microwave so will get the water boiled more quickly, limiting the amount of heat lost during the process.

I might be wrong though. Anyone got any other thoughts?

There's probably a catch that holds the switch down, then when the steam heats the bimetallic strip it bends and pops the switch out again.

Personally, I'd have a go at taking it apart and fixing it, but my experience is that most kettles made since about 1990 are shoddily made disposable items with limited repair options. This includes expensive ones that feel better quality on the outside, they too have always been the same junk inside.

So, hopefully you have an older one?

Because it takes two mug fulls of water to cover the element in my kettle, and I only want one mug of coffee at a time, and there is gritty bits in the bottom which I don't want in my mug.

Put water in mug, stop an inch from the top. Place in microwave, wait for 15 - 20 seconds, get it out, add coffee, sugar and powdered milk, (Coffee Mate), stir, check how hot it is, put back in the microwave for a few more seconds, and check again. Don't walk away from it. If not quite hot enough, give it one more rotation on the turntable.

Maybe think about descaling your kettle?
