You could always have iced tea, then you wouldn't need a kettle.
But how is he going to boil the ice cubes? ;)

The button is probably clogged up with limescale.
If it were me I would take it apart and wash it.

But note that we are talking about electrics and water here. The general rule with electrics is if you need to ask then don't do it based on what some idiot on an internet forum says.
  • The appliance of science . . . simply balance a breeze block on the switch to hold it down. No more achy finger

The button wont be clogged up with limescale as it will never comes in contact with water. What most likly has happened that the bi metallic strip that switches the kettle off when it's boiled is bust.

    New kettle time.

I use Facebook and there are local free sites, plus a local community board you would be able to ask for something like this on.

You can heat a mug full of water in the microwave, I do it every morning for my coffee. My kettle is now redundant.

Be bloody careful. I heat up coffee from the perculator, from the day before, and if you add sugar to super heated coffee, it erupts in your face. Not sure why, but breaking the tension is my thought.
2 mins is about the point that danger occurs in a mug of coffee.
