Honda - Well known issues with hybrid battery

I purchased my Honda Civic IMA hybrid 2 years ago (10 years old now), for a large sum of money. It has developed a fault with the IMA battery and will cost £2129.62p to purchase (and fit) a new IMA battery from Honda. Honda has received reports (from various car magazines) that they are very reliable cars and that is the main reason I purchased a Honda.

The IMA battery draining is a known problem with Honda hybrid cars and I am surprised this has not been resolved before the cars were sold. I cannot pay for another battery and Honda will not help, as it is past the 8 year warranty for IMA battery issues??

Should i go to the small claims court. What other options are available to me?

10 years a very long time for any sort of battery to last.

  • Rechargeable Batteries do not last forever, and a 10 year lifespan is not unreasonable.

  • Battery costs are just part of the running costs of any electric car. Did you think they would last forever?

    I don't know anything about Honda Hybrids, but thought I'd just let you know you never need to put 'p' after any price quote with a pound sign, viz;

    Right:
    36p
    £0.36
    292p
    £2.92

    Wrong:
    £0.36p
    £2.92p

Sorry. Apostrophe crimes wind me up, but I can cope. Two things that get right on my tits though are this and people who use the 24-hour clock but insist on putting 'AM' and 'PM' after the time.

They're like modern Diesels, people don't do their research, people listen to idle gossip, people ignore anyone who can produce facts, people believe sociopathic salesmen, people don't realise their mistake until the DPF/DMF fails.

The original early hyrid cars are now mostly in the 10yr range, it's no wonder it's becoming a common problem.

Even Toyota don't warrant their batteries for that long (used to be 8, now 5), and most experts feel that 10 years will be the average working life for them, certainly in the nissan leaf.

Court won't get you anywhere, if you want to avoid having to pay for problems, do what other people do and buy a new/newer car under warranty - as you're finding out, the cost of ownership isn't necessarily as different as you might think.

I'm afraid I do that sometimes, but only because there's always some idiot who (for example) when faced with 17:00, always asks "AM or PM???".

I'd say what winds me up more than this, is being forced to acknowledge that I live in a world mostly full of complete idiots. If I don't give people the opportunity to prove their stupidity, then I feel less stressed in my everyday life.

  • FIL has a hybrid, God know why for 30 miles a week and doesn't live in London. Lost count of the number of times it wouldn't start through lack of use. I wonder what damage is being done to it through lack of use.

Still when it's sold someone will see it as a low mileage bargain.

Honda are very reliable cars however items such as exhausts, brakes, batteries etc., need replacing as cars get used and older, you cannot expect batteries in a 10 year old car to last for ever.

As you have had the car for two years you can hardly expect the batteries to be replaced for free.
