Actually it really is astonishing that some drivers obviously don't know when and what lights they should have switched on. Some seem to think that they only need dipped head lights on when it's dark. I thought that DRL's were invented for such drivers but all these seem to of achieved is drivers driving in the dark with just the DRL's on thinking that they have their normal lights on when of course they have sod all on at the back!PLEASE NOTEMy advice should be used as guidance only. Maybe get your eyes tested! If you can't see a big car with sidelights what chance has a cyclist got?
Probably a much better chance if they have reasonable lights and reflectors equipped, it's not a matter of eyesight - it's a heck of a lot easier to see a car with its headlights on rather than just its sidelights particularly as in some case the sidelights are quite low, dim and small plus the street lights are dim. I don't see the point in using only sidelights particularly given some people have enough trouble seeing my car as is, having my dipped lights on makes it a lot easier for people to see me and I don't find other dipped lights in any way blinding.

If stopped for having no lights on play the green card, say your saving the planet and using less fuel by not using the lights.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

Maybe drivers should look at just how dazzling they are when driving on main headlights AND fog lights in built-up areas. For most cars with decent lights driving just on sidelights at night in areas with street lighting is not only preferable but also entirely legal.0

Best post this year!
Worst offenders seem to be Nissan Micra drivers, which apparently have a fault that burns out the connector to the headlights.
This however is no excuse for driving about in a faulty car in the middle of winter.
There are also folks who don't know how their lights work and think sidelights are headlights.
Then on top of that we have the fuel saving crew, who think lights cost petrol.

I think you'll find you are in the majority with that opinion.;)0 -
My sidelights aren't rubbish, they're actually really bright and really good :j
It's fine and legal to drive with only them on as long as it's a 30mph with street lights
This can't be true?! Aren't headlights (dipped beam) required up to 30 mins after lighting up time (the officially published time when street lights come on)?
And your sidelights (not DRLs) ARE rubbish. What's wrong with headlights?
Did I see a car the other day with DRLs on, and no lights at the back? You'll be seen from the front, but not the back!
Anyone saying 'get your eyesight tested' - my eyesight's fine. But I'll see a lit car from further away than an unlit car, as will any human, even with perfect vision. If your car's parked, fine, but if you're moving, don't bother with sidelights, they're a waste of time.0 -

Have another read of the Highway Code and the vehicle lighting regulation it liks to.
You'll find its correct.0 -
If you have difficulty seeing a car with sidelights on coming towards you in a lit street on a clear night then yes, you do need to check your eyesight! This can't be true?! I'd rather have a car with sidelights in the above scenario than another lit up like a xmas tree dazzling everyone they come across and preventing anyone being able to see what's around them, ie, cyclists, pedestrians about to cross the road etc.0
