AFAIK it's only in the UK these corner 'marker lights' are referred to as side-lights.

In every other country - certainly in Europe and in he USA & Canada they are called 'parking-lights'.

It is illegal to drive at night with only parking-lights - except in the UK.

Who's out of step? Them or us?

How does the rest of the world manage - they must be daft? ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it only legal to drive at night with sidelights in areas with street lights a certain distance apart, ie 30limits?

That's exactly what I meant - it's only legal to drive in urban/30mph limit areas in the UK with sidelights only.

In every other country I am aware of you would need dipped beam wherever you were mobile at night, including towns/built up areas.

Has nobody figured it out yet?

They bought in DRLs because of people who drive about with no bloody lights on.

They reduce 60 limits to 50, instead of reprimanding people who drive at 40 everywhere and cause frustration + accidents.

The authorities in this country know we have a huge issue with driver incompetence and they cover up for it by shifting the goal posts and changing the rules, so that they can continue their relatively cheap crusade against people who do a few mph over the speed limit on totally open/straight/safe roads.
In short it's too costly to sort out the level of incompetence we have on our roads, so they find a scapegoat instead of tackling the root cause.

Do Bosnia also insist on having lights on during the day in winter, and compulsory winter tyres?

Motoring third world - the UK, that is.
