Remember that along with the power adaptor you need a SATA data cable0

That's your SATA power cable, not a SATA data port.
You need to connect a DATA cable to your drive too. I can see a red SATA data cable in the foreground, have you got free connectors where this one meets the motherboard?0 -

Yes I do, I just didn't have enough reach for a power supply to the top,of the tower where the drive will go.0 -
I have just plugged in the new drive (at last) and I am having exactly the same problem. It opens and closes, the light blinks for a few seconds but the drive wont spin up and run. Now pulling out what ever hair I had left! Any ideas suggestions? This is getting beyond my limited knowledge now.
Thinking about it I did remove some software before this issue started and may be it is linked. I had a media player programme called –
https://www.mediaplayercodecpack.com/
which was always trying to update and the update kept failing so I removed it.
I have just tried to download a driver for the new drive-
http://www.firmwarehq.com/download_2027-file_SH-224BB_SB00.exe.html
and it has popped up a message stating that is the drive cant be found.
I have opened device manager and it is showing the device as-
TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH224DB SCSI CdRom Device
(the new drive I have installed is a Samsung SH-224) so I believe the computer can see it but I am getting this message-
“A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)
Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.”
.
I have clicked on 'Check for solutions' and get “could not load driver software”.
In device manager the drive icon does have a small yellow warning triangle against it.
I have just borrowed an external dvd drive and tried it by the usb- exactly the same issue.0 -
see post 12. 14, it's rare for drives to fail, which is why I suggested checking software first, installing drivers like gear, itunes etc can mess things up have a google about upperfilters.Don't you dare criticise what you cannot understand0

I've sorted it now, did a system restore to a week ago and bingo! I fear I may have wasted £11 on a new drive, but after six years it could have gone anytime. Very relieved.0
