Oh, and maybe Ware. Maybe a tad quaint, but still some life, and nice restaurants, etc.

I've considered all round and nearby. I reckon the OP may like Hertford. Bishops Stortford a bit too busy and towny for me, but certainly one to consider. Also love Stansted Mountfitchet and Sawbridgeworth (where we'll probably go next). There are lots of others further east/up in Herts but I expect too pricey so won't list.

Stortford is quite busy compared to the surrounding area, but I guess if you're coming from North London it probably won't feel like that :)

We used to live in Hertford and it was lovely but a bit too "quiet" for us. Still well connected with two train lines and the A10, A414 etc. Our friends have just moved from Ware to a village called Standon and I always quite liked it (although have never lived there). I don't think you'd get as much for £300k there in account of the GSK site driving up house prices. Hertford and Ware always seemed a lot more expensive than Stortford to us, probably because the trains from Stortford are a lot pricier and also it's a bit further away from London.

Sawbridgeworth and Stansted Mountfitchet are both very nice but Sawbo has issues with plane noise and Mountfitchet was hit quite badly with the flooding the other year (although cheaper than Stortford) so something to bear in mind I guess.

One of the local mums sold up their 3bed house for a bigger place in Bishops Stortford. Havn't heard how she's getting on out there. Might contact her to enquire. Her older child is same age as mine so she might know about schoola too

Lots of people move to Bishops Stortford for the schools. They have a great reputation!

That's very encouraging to hear. Thanks!

Please bear in mind we don't have kids so don't know first hand but from what I've heard from others, the schools do seem to be very good, both primary and secondary. From what I can tell (and this might be out of date info), Herts & Essex (girls only), and Hockerill Anglo-European College (co-ed but follow the European school week and do the international baccalaureate) as well as the private Bishops Stortford College seem to be the preferred secondary school options. Birchwood (co-ed) and the boys' school seem to be less popular for whatever reason. I think possibly their exam results aren't as high?

    Hope that helps!
