city breaks

Any inspirations on where to go?

Will be for myself and sixteen yr old son and maybe OH, couple of nights over Easter.
I keep searching expedia but can't decide where to go, so wondered if anyone could inspire me?

Have looked at Barcelona, Madrid, Berlin,Venice,Rome as well as Dublin and Edinburgh.

Can fly from any London airport.

Think the Italian cities will be too expensive from my research. Son wants to go to Reykjavik but that looks too expensive.

I really need interesting AND cheap ideally no more than £150 for accom and flights .....Any thoughts?

  • Reykjavik is expensive, I think I paid about £800 for my girlfriend and myself to go for 4 nights, with a nice hotel, all costs and baggage, transfers etc. The price of stuff is higher, think central, central London prices for drinks (£8 to £10 was not unusual) and you will pay about £20 each per meal. Best place I have been in my life though, and I have been around...

Rome is not as expensive as you would think and if you are looking at prices, you can see all the sights on a open top bus. Just get off, take a look around and join the next bus. With Iceland you have to get a tour and that is about £50 each a head.

    Hope that helps a bit.

Yep that's great won't cross Rome off the list just yet then, esp I love history but am mindful my son isn't so interested and if it's just us two I can't dealing with him bored.

I think Reykjavik is crossed off as too expensive this time..maybe when we're debt free?

    What do you enjoy doing?

Reykjavik is amazing, easily one of my favourite places in Europe but it is really expensive and I went just after their financial crash. If your on a tight budget I'd probably give it a miss at the moment.

More to the point what is your 16yr old into?
Amsterdam is quite varied, never felt sleazy when I was there. Belfast is actually quite interesting and often overlooked.
    Edinburgh is fab.
York too should be good with easy rail travel. Less time wasted at airports.

16 yr old into minecraft and PlayStation bleurgh!!!!!
I like history but am happy just seeing new places tbh.

I think Reykjavik as much I want to go is defo off the list due to costs.
Amsterdam we did a day trip to last yr from Durinell.
We would like to go for longer but on expedia all the hotels at the price I'd like to pay are a fair way out. But I am aware of how easy travel is in Amsterdam due to last yrs visit.

Hadn't considered Lisbon so thanks for that.
York too esp as we have a friend and family railcard (brought before he turned 16 so he travels for child fare)

We're going to have a long chat tonight and see if we can find something suitable.

Many thanks for the thoughts x

Lisbon or Berlin. Lisbon is probably cheaper when you get there but Berlin isn't too expensive either. Try airbnb for somewhere to stay. My last couple of city breaks were airbnb apartments and its so much better than a hotel.

If you like Barcelona then you will like Lisbon. Similar vibe to the city but it's smaller, cheaper and with fewer pickpockets. Some nice beach resorts nearby.

Personally, I prefer Madrid to Barcelona - but it is a long way from the beach.

For somewhere different, how about Krakow or Warsaw in Poland - though your 16 year old may prefer it in a few years time when he can enjoy the beer and vodka. 16 year old can be a tough time to go on holiday as you are too old for the kids stuff but can't join in with the adult activities either.
