I am a UK citizen from birth. I opt out of the edited electoral roll.

My boss is the FD of our company, which is a reasonable size. Based on their list of people that could certify the document, he should qualify. His details will be on companies house if they needed to check...

I've sent the certified ID off yesterday, hopefully I should hear back in a few days.

Not a good idea to cancel an application. The search will stay on your credit file for a year, so the more applications you make in that time, the less attractive you're likely to look to lenders.

I was only thinking if OP was on electoral roll then the ID might not be needed - so perhaps there is more to this application than we have been told.

The electoral roll is used for address verification, not ID.

Funnily enough I read another post today with AMEX asking for the same thing, so maybe not out the normal for them.

Some banks have a list of people who can certify documents, what does your boss do ? Does he have any professional registration at all ? They might not accept it if they can't verify who he is.

Whenever I've had this in the past, it's been a fairly predictable list of types, such as this sort of thing: https://www.gov.uk/countersigning-passport-applications

(My other half has done this for people in the past as someone who qualifies - for passports, bank stuff, etc).

The lists that banks use are very much shorter than that one. It's usually limited to people like doctors, solicitors, chartered accountants etc.

Amex accept post office certification. The post office won't use the specific wording that Amex ask for, they'll just photocopy it and stamp it to say "original sighted and verified" or something like that. It will be fine though. The post office charge approx £8 for this.

Yeah I did see that, if they don't accept the one my boss did I might go for that route. It is quite a pain though, I wish they had mentioned something before the application, I could have got it prepared in advance. It's now taking a lot longer than I anticipated to get this card, not ideal :(

Argh! So I've just spoken to American Express, and the second document is also not good enough. It needed to be certified by someone registered with the FCA? They didn't tell me this beforehand!

I really really really wish they had been transparent about this process from the start, I would have avoided them like the plague if I had known and just gone with a provider on the high street.

Pretty sure I'm just going to cancel the application and forget about it for now.

EDIT: Went to the post office, massive queue, decided sod this, cancelled application.

Lesson learned: stick to high street banks, nothing trumps being able to speak to someone face to face.
