Partner has to go back to work after baby, but cant afford childcare

  • Hi all,

    We are in serious Crisis.

my partners maternity leave is up February, and she is due to go back to work.
however; there is nobody to look after our little one.
    Child care is too expensive.
I earn £20,000 per year and this just about covers the house and bills, it doesnt include running the car, baby food, our food.
My partners maternity pay, just covers that.

I earn too much to be entitled to any benefit, and if my partner went back to work, her wage would just cover the childcare, probably even shortfall.

which would leave us without money for food etc,
If she doesnt go back, we are still in the same situation.

I work 60 hours per week, and im salary so dont get paid overtime.

We have no where else to go and no one that can help us. We have a contract on our house until July so I have to keep paying for that.

We need to earn an additional £500 per month, in able to survive.

    All help appreciated.

You will get tax criedits if your wife gives up work to stay at home. You get tax criedits if you earn under £26.000. However that wont cover 500 pounds but it might help a bit.(you need to ring tax criedits and find this out as online thing is allways wrong for me).
Maybe she could get any evening job when you or family are able to look after baby. Grand parents might be happy to have baby on saturday too. I worked every evening and a saturday day when my children where little when husband or family could take children for me.

  • If using a registered childminder/provider then the limit can go up to £41,000 depending on costs.
yes thats right so some childcare can be cliamed if family cant help.

why do people only realise this stuff after having a baby rather than planning for it before hand?

Have you seen the comments that are posted if anyone posts up a thread entitled "can we afford to have a baby?"

The usual comments are, when you can afford it its too late or its never a good time so get making babies.

i agree that theres never a perfectly right time to start a family....
but unless you can survive without the need for state benefit ( apart from child benefit) it is most definitely the wrong time
  • but the op says they cannot pay the bills regardless of whether she returns to work or not as they either can't afford for her to stay home or if she does return to work then they can't afford childcare. If the benefits are not enough to bridge the gap then the only options are to earn more or spend less. There is no magic wand that will make things better

  • Your partner could work nights in a care home? A few nights a week and you would be home to look after the baby?

I love it when people use the same username on lots of forums. Especially car forums. And flying forums. Expensive hobbies those.

OP, whatever you jizzed your money up on over the past year, it's time to sell the scooby.

Hahahaha. Love this. Absolutely love this. :rotfl:

Definitely sell the Subaru, buy a family car that's cheaper to run. No more holidays all over the world. Gym membership needs to be cancelled, if you are taking steroids then I'm surprised you've been able to procreate, you may want a DNA test (call Jeremy Kyle), cut out the protein shakes etc - all very expensive. Same goes for expensive branded clothing... and if your Mrs is into hair salon appointments, fake nails, sunbeds & branded clothing, again it's time to cut!

Remember, you have a baby now.
