I for one don't care whether the scots will be able afford things per se as the other effects will make it all worthwhile.
However, as the English are a very generous people, we know that when the flood of scots exploiting the english NHS (just like the Welsh are already doing) we will be ever so generous and allow it.
The English/rUK are just as much up to their eyeballs in debt and deficits as Scotland is. UK deficit 69.5 billion, minus 15bn = 54.5 billion. Generali and yourself like to pretend otherwise, but English generosity doesn't come in to it, since you're spending more than you earn too and taking out Wonga loans to cover the difference for everyone. Scroungers. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

indeed so, UK has too much debt :
most arose because of the financial crisis and having to bail out the (what Alex/Nicola used to call scottish) banks.
However the UK government is reducing the debt but this reduction is being fiercely resisted by the SNP and by yourself : sadly we borrowing to provide the ungrateful scots more funding than the decent people of Yorkshire
scotland accounts for 15/69 = 21% of the deficit whilst it only account for about 8% of the UK population0 -

The SNP are anti austerity. So you can't have your cake and eat it. Problem is austerity generated from Westminster makes growing the Scottish economy even more of a challenge.0 -
The Scottish government do seem more comfortable with blaming Westminster than trying to even accept they have a lot of work to do just to balance the books.
So far Westminster has been fairly compliant, but I can see a move even further right in the UK government.
If the Scottish MPs do take an aggressive line, there will be even less sympathy to support Scottish growth down here.
Perhaps creating disenchantment amongst the rUK public is a strategy most likely to deliver independence?
Are the UK gov balancing the books?
I can see a move further right too. Doesn't sit too well with your average scots voter.
So, we need sympathy to support Scottish industries? I thought we were a collective......
Is your statement evidence that industry is London centric and if we don't kow tow then we will suffer financially? Seems like it sadly.0 -

It may do. But we were talking about GERS and all the hysterics, headlines and stuff that goes on every year when it comes out. I'm not for one minute saying that things are all rosy in the garden and that there aren't potentially quite significant problems, and lots of them. What I'm less convinced about is if they are insurmountable. Even the way this hypothetical 15bn deficit is talked about is disingenuous as if Scotland needs to have a balance sheet of 0 before independence could ever be a vague consideration.
But lets not get carried away and pretend that deficits are something unique to Scotland. England/rUK also has a significant deficit. Albeit not estimated to be quite as crippling. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

obviously the problems are surmountable but not with the current SNP spending and taxation plans
it may be that the world will be happy to lend lots of money to brand new country with a budget deficit of such a size : I'm sure that fact that they started their independent life by refusing to pay their debt to rUK will be a factor.0
