In other news, a nearby thread is discussing the parlous state of the US's northerly state, Michigan, and, totally without irony, comparing it with Canada.
Which would Scotland be better off being;
"better together" Michigan or
"separatist socialist hell-hole" Canada.

Canada is as fair enough model, a federal country where those in its provinces pay taxes to the provincial government for locally devolved matters, and federal taxes to pay for the federal government which does those things which are not devolved.
Michigan - much the same as a Province.Union, not Disunion

which aspect of canada do you most admire
-its population of nearly 40 million
-that there is no significant separatist movement any more
-the way Quebec's financial service industry was trashed during its separatist madness
-or is it the budget surplus it runs?
not much in common with scotland0 -
I'm claiming that your figures are clearly bunkum.
When inflation is 0% how can an increase in nominal spending be a real fall?
How can a part of the economy that you claim is 1% of £170,000,000,000 produce taxes you claim to be of the order of £7,000,000,000?
It's rubbish.
Welcome to the world of political economics Gen.
Modus Operandi as follows :
- decide on your preferred outcome/"message"
- select a bunch of stats or figures to support outcome
- conveniently ignore other aspects, or inconsistencies in your data set
- when such inconsistencies are pointed out, change topic completely to how high thread prices are killing the Kilt industry or similar
Here's my amateur attempt
On the radio today (so it must be true!) :
- Scots average income levels are 8p per hour better off than their Southerly neighbour
- => any cuts can't be hurting Scottish jobs as much as "down here", can they?0 -
That seems it was down to long term effects. Nothing to do with 'austerity'.The findings were released ahead of a major new report from the Resolution Foundation on The State of Working Scotland, which will be published later this week. The think tank argued steady growth, high employment and improved productivity in the early and mid 2000s were likely to have been the driver of Scotland's strong performance on pay prior to the recession.
When the recession hit, workers in Scotland suffered less as a result of the squeeze on wages but it had sharper falls in employment, the foundation added. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

I guess you will be wanting to return that 3k per family you get from the poor people of Yorkshire?0 -
You claimed that oil is 1% of Scottish GDP and that the tax take on that is c.£7,000,000,000. I showed that to be impossible. You're just getting a bit muddled. (Clue: proper economists estimate Scotland's GDP to be 16-18% oil or did when the oil price was $110/bbl, it'll be rather less now and falling of course).
I'm not getting muddled. You are. That article in question said Scottish GDP is only 1% less than UK GDP without oil.Thankfully, it does not. Even without oil, Scotland’s GDP per head is less than 1% lower than the rest of the UK’s.It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

D'aaaw. * wipes away tears *
Sorry, no powers to do that. The Scottish Govt only do devolved matters. Poor people in Yorkshire are down to other parties and governments. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

Another poll out today like yesterdays with the Leave camp ahead for the EU referendum. But not in Scotland.Scotland would vote for independence if the UK decides to leave the European Union, a poll suggests.
People in Scotland are overwhelmingly against an EU exit, by 65% to 35%, in contrast to people in England who are narrowly in favour by 53% to 47%, a Panelbase poll for for the Sunday Times and Heart FM indicates....
....She would have the backing of 54% for another referendum if the UK votes to leave the EU, the poll of 1053 voters in Scotland and 1034 adults in England and Wales suggests. And the Yes to independence campaign would win the day by 52% - up seven points on the 45% who voted Yes in 2014 and five points on the 47% who say they would vote for independence anyway in the poll.
....John Curtice, professor of politics at Strathclyde University, told the Sunday Times: "If Britain were to vote to leave the EU it could tip the balance on independence from a narrow margin against to a narrow margin in favour."Scottish voters think independence is a matter of time, with just over two thirds (67%) viewing it as likely within five to 30 years, the poll conducted from January 8-14 suggests.
Wonder how long Cameron can delay 'naming the date'.. It seems the longer he delays, the more the Leave camp gain ground. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

no, that's not right
Just as Nicola doesn't take the full inflated salary, she is entitled to, as the highest paid public official in the UK, you can voluntarily renounce this immoral levy on the English and return it.
Matter of principles for people that believe in 'fairer' and 'more equal' society.
But I find that most people with principles tend to find that principles co-incides with self interest. Amazing.0
