Scotland's financial health is down to GO's austerity drive........:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Which is debatable and nothing to do with the point. Which is that the Scottish Govt, or SNP whatever you prefer is being drawn over the media 'hot coals' for having an underspend. One which Labour when in Scottish govt had too, and FAR larger incidentally ( but they gave any extra back ). And that exactly same would happen should there have been an overspend in terms of reporting in the media. It's an absolutely ridiculous state of affairs.

Honestly, the Scottish public is getting so fed up with this sort of 'damned if they do, damned if they don't' type reporting. The Herald today has an SNP MP front page 'news' ( instead of the 'Home and Garden' section ), because he bought a derelict house in London 20 years ago while he was a BBC reporter and did it up. And used Farrow and Ball paint ! Trying to tie it into the Thompson affair. So now SNP MP's aren't even allowed have bought houses in the past. Good grief it's getting silly. And will backfire. Like the rest of this hyperbole has so far.
The SNP has yet to deliver on it's promises of a more generous welfare system, better pensions and universal free childcare ;)

Where's the funding going to come from. :shhh:
Sorry ? I must've missed the fact somehow that Scotland is now independent and in complete control of welfare systems, pensions and universal free childcare along the way.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?
  • That's not a surplus that's an underspend - a surplus would be generating more income than expenditure, something an independent scotland would find impossible without draconian taxation and huge spending cuts.

You can't 'generate more income' than expenditure when most of your taxes and revenues go elsewhere. And you get a block grant back for your efforts.

Swinney got an amount of money for Scottish devolved affairs. And didn't spend all of it. In Scottish terms, it's a surplus from this year to be rolled over for next year.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

  • Stop fooling yourself and trying to fool others.

We don`t have enough GDP to support our heavily weighted dependence based economy on your much loved subsidy from Westminster.

It's funny reading posts simultaneously boasting about underspend of the budget while whinging on about a lack of money to spend.

I think you've gotten mixed up between with budgets and powers. It's new powers the Scots want delivered and, pretty pronto too. No-one was 'boasting' about an underspend. It's 'normal' for any Scottish Govt as, whoever is in power, has to by law balance the books. No, it was the media and posters like Hamish making a complete meal of a 'normal underspend'... just because it was the SNP that sounded pretty 'whingy' to me.

    And uh-oh... those powers...

Gordon Brown: the Vow is not being delivered

Gordon Brown has warned that the Vow will not be delivered if David Cameron does not make urgent changes to the Scotland Bill within the next two weeks.
Brown believes David Cameron was “simply wrong” to claim the vow is being delivered in full and that the current offering from the UK Government represents an “explosive cocktail of measures that could blow the Union apart”.

    Lastly, the 'Corbyn bounce' ?
The long wait for a full-scale poll of Scottish voting intentions conducted after the election of Jeremy Corbyn is now over, with the publication today of the monthly TNS poll.

    Constituency ballot :

    SNP 56% (-2)
    Labour 21% (-2)
    Conservatives 12% (n/c)
    Liberal Democrats 6% (n/c)

    Regional list ballot :

    SNP 52% (+1)
    Labour 23% (-1)
    Conservatives 11% (n/c)
    Liberal Democrats 6% (n/c)
    Greens 5% (-1)

Always interested in detail of poll. @tns_global has @scottishlabour support 16-34 year olds at 13%. 16-54 yrs is 16%. Wow.
...hasn't bounced very much as yet.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.

No I'm not mixed up, I even have a link a post or two back.

As for magic powers and the rest I've already pointed out that the Bill is still under process and some changes are likely.

But what you forget is that there two sides to this situation, it's not just about Scotland, the Bill has to strike a balance between Scotland and the Union and while you lot are in Me Me Me more you can expect zilch.

I don't care what Brown says.

I don't care what Brown says.

It matters not a jot whether you care or not though does it?

The people who do care will be the ones making 'noise' and Gordon Brown agreeing with them will only spur them on. The point is this is not going to quietly fade away. Until people/politicians feel the powers promised have been met there will continue to be pressure to meet what helped keep the union together. What you fail to recognise is that Scotland has been politicised & energised since last year. Politics is widely discussed and still a hot topic. Those who took an interest remain alert and keen to keep abreast of the goings on.

I applaud Shakes for her patience, tolerance and explanations about how it is up here in Scotland. :T

I find it trying to respond here anymore as I've accepted some of us will never agree.

This article expands on what Shakes has been explaining about the surplus.

Any flaws will need to be pointed out to me as I can't see any.

the vow will never be delivered as the SNP will always demand more:
the SNP will always find some ridiculous reason for an extra demand
    and why not ?
just practice for the million reasons why the Scots won't pay their share of the national debt when at last we are free of them.

Only six months now before the scottish elections .....
