Delaying EVEL and a fox hunting vote: some mighty victories for the SNP.
On the other side of the ledger the Tories managed to get their flagship policies through the budget so successfully that not only are the laws in place but the Labour leader herself supports them!
This Government is doing just fine.
It's gone better than they could reasonably have expected before the GE I reckon.
Labour and the LibDems have had to go away and 'find themselves' again. Sure, the SNP can be problematic but the numbers are small enough to be contained, and the SNP cause Labour problems too.
The Tory problem in the past has often been an internal fracturing within the party.
In a way, they need a protest party on the other side to unite against. Who said the SNP aren't useful?0 -
Yes, it is surely a policy of the SNP to get the other parts of the UK to pay for some form of privileged lifestyle for which the SNP would claim credit, and on top of that to pay for borrowed investment in Scotland which would bolster the substance of areas where start up costs for Natland have been shown to be too large to hide.
...
I don't think the Tory government can hope to win over the hearts and minds of the Scots.
What they can do is show that an alternate, softer, form of devolved power actually works.
If they can make the so called Northern Powerhouse work (or even seem to work) then people might see more value in city mayors and super councils.0 -

Steady on, their record on decentralising or devolving powers is abysmal. Whatever happened to their proposals that the UK have two capitals, London and Edinburgh. Or even modest ones like making Scottish banknotes legal tender? Anybody remember that happened to those ideas?

but the voters in scotland government can determine their own hunting policy, whilst the hated english cannot.
anyone remember what happened to that snp policy?
but it all helps the end policy : scotland to be as free from the hated english as the people of greece are.0 -

And lest we forget, the SNP and Labour need pretty much everyone else to vote with them plus quite a few Tories to overturn anything.
The SNP's power, such as it is, is largely due to being able to piggy back onto Labour, a Unionist party which may have been trounced in Scotland but is still the second largest party a very long way ahead of the SNP.
The SNP can be an annoyance to the Government if they can keep Labour on side and persuade some Tories to abstain. If the Conservatives vote as a group then they can pass whatever laws they like within the confines of the constitution.0 -

Scottish banknotes legal tender? How does that work? Backed by what? Lottery winners?
There is only one capital of Great Britain, it is London.
Dorchester is your local capitalUnion, not Disunion

Were these things? I can't find a reference to either on Google. A link or two would be interesting.
Regarding legal tender, that's something that is given far too much importance by people regarding all sorts of things. Legal tender only really means that under law if you offer to settle a debt using legal tender then a refusal can be prejudicial in court if it comes to the creditor suing the debtor.
If you'd made an honest attempt to pay that debt using Scottish bank notes I suspect common law would lead the rules of legal tender to be applied.
Two capitals sitting simultaneously would be interesting but not unique. Oman has, or had when I visited, two capitals: Muscat and Nizwa.
Muscat was the capital of the coastal strip and Nizwa was the capital of the interior. As the country is an absolute monarchy with a 'consultative council', keeping decisions consistent across the two places as Sultan Caboos is The Man.0 -

Back in the real world, we have this delightful contradiction to mull over...
And just a few short months later....
Whooops....
She did well. The SNP won't suffer at the ballot box. And the Tories have had a humiliating climb down on 4 headline issues in 10 weeks.. precieved by many as down the SNP. The fact that newspaper columnists are upset about it is a good thing. And like I've already said. Linking Fox Hunting to EVEL will be a big mistake. It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0 -

But in the past we could afford failure.
Right now, I don't think we can.
If the government is unable to get the regions contributing more to the economy I don't think we will prosper and pay the debt off.
As an example, why is giving the Manchester councils the ability to manage the NHS budget alongside the community health costs a bad thing?0 -

They're not through yet. And Harman is only temporarily in charge, back pedaling like mad over her pronouncements last week. And you forgot...But it is hard to dismiss purely as party spin the SNP’s claim that it has already been responsible for four Tory climbdowns: on human rights, the date of the EU referendum, Evel and now foxhunting.
The parliament is only 10 weeks old. I'd say the Tories are having a few problems already. More to come. Cameron and Fallon seem to be a in a bit of a fix already re Syria/bombing.. Not good.It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?0
