I was in Barcelona for the weekend. It's less than nine months since I was last there and I stayed at the same place. However I was surprised by how much the sentiment for independence had grown since I was last there.

I don't know whether the Catalans have been buoyed by what's happening in Scotland, but there were many more independence flags hanging from balconies, many people in shops saying merci rather than gracias, more buskers singing in Catalan and shops not even trying to have signage in Spanish.

I have been to Barcelona 8 times previously and have always found, for example, taxi drivers who would rather speak to you in French than Spanish, but it definitely felt more on the march to the exit this time.

taxi drivers who would rather speak to you in French than Spanish,

When we were there in October we were eating in one of those crap restaurants on top of the bullring in Placa Espanya (actually watching the WRC cars racing about) and the waitress kept talking to me in French. I didn't want to appear French (i.e. rude) so I responded in French, and so it continued............

However, the Tories seem very 'unkeen' to offer it and to 'keep that subsidy' right on going. You have to wonder why. I do... Especially with all those massive austerity cuts right around the corner.

Scotland needs 'that subsidy'. That's the reality of the situation right now.

As a nation we are overspending....in ALL areas. I know political fans think they can ignore this fact by dressing it up under an "anti-austerity" banner, but it's still true.

The cuts are coming for a reason. They will shrink the state; allow us to divert precious financial resources to the revenue earning side of the economy; they will rebalance things.

This will help us all, even Scotland. People have realised this which is why they voted for a Conservative government.

I wonder come 2020 if there will noticable difference in the performance and ongoing costs between Scotland`s devolved public services and comparable services in England and the rUK.
We`ll perhaps be able to judge if the Tories agenda of reform driven by austerity or the SNP`s alternative plan has won through.

No, he means that FFA wouldn't be compatible with the union if Westminster followed a different path. And a Federal solution would mean fiscal checks and balances throughout the UK ( which obviously wouldn't be popular either ).. So the 'block grant' is either adjusted for balance re federalism. Or is taken away altogether via FFA.

He wants independence string. He's warning of the dangers of FFA and Federalism. And laying out why, in his opinion, Westminster doesn't want Scotland to have FFA or the UK a federal system.
Well I've opined a number of times that FFA is not compatible with the Union which is why I don't think that is, or will be, on the table. In such a system envisaged by the SNP Scotland's contribution to the Union would not be enough to support Scotland's use of the Pound, let alone other services which the Scottish people voted for when they chose the Union over Natland.

Fiscal checks and balances throughout the Union would be very popular, contrary to your claim. I sincerely hope that there are a lot of checks of balances applied to the SNP so they are not able to economically damage the UK in the same way as they intend for Scotland.

Scots will revolt if England tries to tear them out of EU

    Constitutional Crisis on horizon

Second Scottish Independence referendum this parliament now more likely than not

Break up of the UK back on the agenda thanks to... David Cameron

I hope all the Tory voters are very happy with themselves.

Firstly it's vanishingly unlike;y that the UK would do something so stupid as vote its way out of the EU.

Secondly, AIUI the Labour front runner in the leadership campaign also quite likes this referendum idea.

No, we didn't vote them in up here, nor the 'slightly less but nicer austerity' cuts Labour party either. We obviously preferred anti-austerity measures to the cuts coming down the line. There's 'shrinking the state' then there's the Tories.

Still, I guess in the long run, one of the most right wing Tory governments back in power, making huge cuts... Can only drive support for full independence upwards over the next few years.
It all seems so stupid it makes me want to give up.
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid ?
