Ex girlfriend trying to make me pay for the car!!

  • Legally it's not as clear-cut as whose name is on the registration documents, or who paid the loan, but I believe that if this were taken to court, the woman would certainly be awarded something, if not the whole cost of the car.

Ethically, the OP wouldn't have posted here unless there was some doubt in his mind as to whether he acted fairly - he hasn't.

The receipt is the piece of paper that will establish ownership in a court.

The OP joined 2 days ago to ask this question and probably wont be back as he didnt get the answer he was looking for.

Most people on there would struggle to get a loan for £1200 never mind £12000.

OP has obviously been cheated on (rightly or wrongly) by his ex and is using this loan as a childish means of revenge. He should grow some balls, give her back the car and get on with his life.

From the OP I saw it more as the GF decided to buy him a car...

    HBS x

It would depend on what was agreed/discussed at the time. If she went off on her own and bought the car and presented it as a gift then thats what it is. If, however, she took out a loan in someway on behalf of the OP or some other arrangement then it might not be a 'gift'.

Personally I never had the fortune to meet a girl that went and spent £12,000 on a car for me as a gift .... I can't understand why not though ... what, with my good looks an all ....

Gift or not, the OP was paying just under £350 a month regularly on what they say was "helping them out". Any Judge, either Judy or Rinder would say that this payment was for the loan. Getting the money out of the OP would be another story.

If this was a gift, Christmas present, Birthday or an Un-Birthday present then why would they pay them £350 a month, every month to help them out? I bet my last pound that the loan repayments where something similar.

The Judge, if it went that far, would work on the basis of reasonable probability.

You're assuming the money transfers started at the same time as the car was bought.

basically around 2 years ago my girlfriend at the time took a £12,000 loan out to buy me a car as a gift.... the car is registered in my name and has been paid outright by the loan so is free on the HPI check..

i used online banking to send her money for food shopping and her travelling to work around £80 a week.. un beknown to me she was actually using this money to help pay off the loan.. now we've gone our separate ways she wants me to take over the loan?

first of all i did not ask her to get me the car.. there is around £7000 left on the loan i'd like to know if anyone on here knows where is stand? as i obviously dont want to carry on paying it.. (which sounds harsh but im not sure i can afford it)

OMG .. this lady has had such a lucky escape!
