Girlfriend's don't give £12k cars as gifts unless perhaps they are Taylor Swift or their Daddy is Bernie Ecclestone.

BTW what present did you get for her that year?

When you say the car is registered in your name do you mean your name is on the V5 document? If so that doesn't prove you are the legal owner of the car.

If your ex can show the car was purchased with funds from her personal account (which wouldn't be hard) she could probably argue that the car is hers and she just let you use it.

Just give it back before it gets really messy and move on.

They do actually, in 2000 my then GF wanted to help massively with my next car purchase, I declined as we are both working and I'm a person that what you see me with I have worked for and it's paid for. My daughters Auntie bought her then BF a £20k Subaru Imprezza brand new in 2005 she was and still is driving around in a beat up van, they split but the car was left with her, she couldn't get it insured but the Auntie still owns the car it's got about 3000 miles on the clock and just sat on the drive for years now.

It's up to the OP which way he wants to sort it, he can simply say no way and it's a lesson learnt for his ex. Or he could be proud and give her the proceeds from the sale of the car, she maybe still out of pocket but less so.
    It's a sorry situation though.

From the OP I saw it more as the GF decided to buy him a car...

I wish I could find someone who would gift me a car, would be well appreciated.

It's entirely plausible, people do crazy things.

Only a dishonest weasel would try to pull that trick.

Your ex-GF was good enough to get a loan for you (I presume lousy credit yourself), and you've been paying her £80 a week to pay it off.

Legally, I think you'll find that registered keeper is not synonymous with owner, and courts will tell you to return it.

Morally (if you have any) you ought to return it.

As others have said, £12k seems a small price to pay to get rid of a loser like the OP.

ive done 2 hpi checks against the car and there is no outstanding finance, so the car is mine and totally paid for. if things where dealt with in an adult way when we parted id have had no problems paying the rest of the loan what so ever but.. and no we both lived with parents but totally independent with out food/washing etc hence why i was helping her out

You both lived with parents and you claim you paid £80 per week for her food /washing .Well this is Bull !!!! .
If you are going to man up to it get a loan yourself and pay her back . I suspect as others have suggested your credit rating is stuffed and you are going to squirm your way out of it .
This woman had done you a HUGH favour and you know it .

  • Surprising how quiet the OP has gone as if he thought he would get sympathy no-one deserves to be treated the way he's treating his ex he will probably never rear his ugly head and nasty attitude again

I hope his ex comes on here and gets advice and sues his sorry arris for every penny nasty piece of work!!!

The answer is usually the most obvious one, not the craziest one.
